of darkly witty white-soul-cum-country sounds like many things. But what makes them tick? We find out withGolddiggas, Headnodders and Pholk Songs.Cover albums are tricky. The band take a risk with "Don't Stop Moving" and "You're The One That I Want", aware of the fans (often their own) who may not appreciate the radical reinterpretations offered here, slowing them down and treating them as near-jazz pieces. Similarly ELO, Blue Oyster Cult, Lush (!), and The Ramones (!!!) get the treatment. Some of it works- "Don't Fear The Reaper" loses its riff but gains smoky Latin overtones--while some of the rearrangements may be considered a little arbitrary. The breadth of taste is to be applauded, as is the adventurous spirit, but this might be one that appeals more to the most loyal of fans.--Thom Allott

In my mind a cover-version is an act of legalised plagiarism. They provide an insight into the lack of talent of a performer, whose management team can’t find anything better to do than cash in on someone’s celebrity status. And what really gets my hackles up is the army of fans who proclaim the performer a star, completely bypassing the fact that the original artist, who wrote/sang the song, did all the hard work.
Just ... ...at number one. And throwing in a video of scantily clad women has managed (for the most part) to disguise the fact that it nothing more than an over synthesised cover-version of Steve Winwood’s Valerie.
I love the Beautiful South. FACT
When I listen to music, I don’t want my delicate lugholes assaulted by computer generated drum & bass or the inane ramblings of gangsta rappers telling me how their hoe is really a b*tch. I don’t want Britney grunting ...

Don't Fear The Cover Review ofGolddiggas Headnodders And Pholk Songs - Beautiful South (The)by
Bhelliom
Advantages: Twelve varied songs Disadvantages: It was only last year you gave the South a tenner for 'Gaze'!
Paul Heaton is obsessed with chart positons - after last year's low-key 'Gaze', he's probably hoping that this set of cover versions will re-raise the public profile of his band. Well, it probably won't, but if you're an established fan of the band then you're not going to care about that. Despite chart positions, 'Gaze' was as good as any of their albums, and even though a collection of covers might appear to be the last resort of an exhausted band, ... ...going to get it then make sure you get the limited edition packaging - a smart hardback, illustrated book that, unlike a lot of other fancy packaging out there, actually fits on your shelf - it's the same size as a normal CD case.
Opening number 'You're The One That I Want' is basically a slowed-down version of the 'Grease' classic. The chorus grates at first, since the melody has been changed a bit, but get rid of your pre-conceptions of how the ...

The South/South Divide Review ofGolddiggas Headnodders And Pholk Songs - Beautiful South (The)by
lisacallow
Advantages: New concept, classic sound! Disadvantages: You've heard them before, but not SouthStyle
Anticipating for a while this epic new release from the Beautiful South, I was inquisitively curious after seeing a performance of Don't Stop Moving in Channel 4's T4 about 2 weeks ago. I enthusiastically awaited the release date, eager to hear more of this strange new twist in the creative portfolio of such a renowned band.
The performance was exceedingly surprising. I predicted a parallel adaptation of the original song by S Club 7, and delightedly ... ...is set to be the first single set for release from the Goldigga's album, has been dramatically altered in all aspects of the original. Don't Stop Moving waas originally a pop-fuelled teeny bopping school disco style song aimed at S Club 7's equally teeny-bopping target audience. This, if I may say highly improved version has taken all of those key target aspects and delivered instead, a slower tempo, maturer synchronicity, and effective re-arrangement ...

Advantages: its the beautiful south Disadvantages: but now as we know it jim
OK, so the beautiful south have released an album full of covers, what a dissapointment i hear you scream, but there not the usual sheet of covers we come to expect. I hate it when bands covers songs but look at this for a track listing.
1. You're The One That I Want
2. Livin' Thing
3. This Will Be Our Year
4. Ciao!
5. Valentine
6. Don't Fear The Reaper
7. This Old Skin
8. Don't Stop Moving (yes, the S club one)
9. Till I Can't Take It Anymore
... ...Love With You
When the beautiful south were releasing tracks like Perfect 10 and A little time, who would have predicted years from now they would be covering S clubs dont stop moving, not me thats for sure.
I bought this album thinking if the beautiful south are going to cover some tracks they will make them their own and take them to another level, wrong again, its a very mediocre album, i resent spending my hard earned £10 on it. The only saving ...
