INTRO:
Marilyn Manson, the self proclaimed 'antichrist superstar' has had his share of hits in his day. From the dark gothic feel of the cover 'Sweet Dreams', The grindy rock stylings of 'Beautiful people', to the loud and energetic 'Disposable teens', Manson a.k.a Brain Warner could always know how to string together a catchy, yet heavy song that rarely disappointed.
After the HUGE success of 'Holywood' it was clear the follow up needed to be something special to match its broad appeal, so lets take a listen to the new album 'The golden age of the grotesque'
The first track on this album is an INTRO, its merely some electronic sounds mixed with some guitars. It’s nothing stunning but it sets the stage for the album and leads delicately into the next song.
The first proper track is also the second single 'THIS IS THE NEW SH*T', I wasn’t convinced by this title but the song is actually good. It starts off with the dark gothic feel Manson does so feel and then leads into an onslaught of vocals. However I would say the vocals aren’t as strong as they used to be, but the chorus really gets the album started with a heavy beat and riff. It’s standard Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus stuff but its energetic and a good start.
'MOBSCENE' was the first single on this album and you can see why, its one of Manson’s 'insta-hits', starting off with a classic Manson riff leading onto some nice vocals, before a chorus that blows you away, then there’s also some female vocals here ' YOU CAME TO SEE THE MOBSCENE, BUT NOW IT IS THE OBSCENE, ITS BETTER THEN A SEX SCENE' screams Brian is classic fashion. The female vocals only add to the flow of the song and it’s a great song in all!
The next track is a little beauty too, oddly named 'DOLL DAGGA BUZZ BUZZ ZIGGETY ZAG' and it’s a funny little weird track, but includes some excellent riffs and drum beats before Manson comes in screaming the chorus which is obvious. It’s a wild, lively and zany track that will surely get you up and jumping!
'USE YOUR FIST AND NOT YOUR MOUTH'. I think I’ll let people draw their own conclusions as to the meaning of the title, that’s probably for the best as well. The actual song though is another rock monster, although the opening riff seems to lean more to towards generic nu metal. The vocals aren’t quite so strong in this song, but the chorus is well structured and again, will have you out of your seat!
Now its time for the title track of the album 'THE GOLDEN AGE OF GROTESQUE'. Its weird, it’s disturbing, but it’s not that bad. The song overall has the feel and theme of a circus. There are no proper riffs, only a weird distortion effect along with a repeating drum beat and some effects alongside Brian pumping out some strong lyrics. It may not appeal to everyone, but I think it’s fairly original and neat.
'(S)AINT' follows it up with some nice riffs, vocals, and a catchy chorus as he seems to be making a lot on this album. Vocals make a lot of this song with Manson singing 'I GOT AN F AND A C AND A K TOO’ it's a neat little song.
Next up is 'KA-BOOM, KA-BOOM' and Manson is surely on a roll with the guitars on this album, it’s another chunky riff that leads to some unbacked vocals. I am not too sure the unbacked vocals always work excellently but they do work a lot better when backed by the guitars properly. This is a slower but powerful monster of a song that seems to ooze 'Static-x' even.
'SLUTGARDEN' has one of the best openings of the album, with a little guitar solo piece soon backed by vocals and drums, best of all is the chorus which is another monster of a chunky riff. Seems to relate to him making an X-rated movie in some way, whatever it relates too it's another get handbangy track!
'(UNTRANSLATED)' is a slightly mellower track with some haunting vocals and lots of guitar effects At least it’s mellow at first, before it bursts into a loud chorus that almost sounds like the chorus to Muse's 'BLISS' at times. It’s a bit different from the usual run of things but it works really well, the riffs are chunky and the effects are well done, this albums turning out rather well isn’t it.
The next track 'PARA-NOIR' does nothing to thwart the run of great tracks; it starts off dark and gothic and leads into an even more dark and gothic verse. Although I wasn’t so keen on the lyrics of this song, '**** you for loving me' is not so good as what we've heard earlier, but the riff and beat that goes beside it more then makes up for it, its a crunching heavy riff, with some great effects. Its also a fairly long song coming in at just over six minutes, but you don’t get bored over that six minutes its all good rock music.
'BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS' roars in straight after with more loud heavy pounding riffs and loud beating drums, this is really what the band are all about. Manson classes himself as rock 'n' roll and I’lld say that sums him up perfectly. As this track shows its perfect music to jump about to, as well as having those powerful vocals!
'BETTER OF 2 EVILS' is a decent track, although it lacks the instant catchiness of some of the others. It's still a heavy track though, More heavy grinding riffs and clear-cut vocals. The bridge in this song is the best part however; the riffs and vocals are storming.
Penultimate track 'VODEVIL' is an interesting track, more effects and less guitars for the intro, but more guitars and heavier drums for the chorus. Another stormer of a chorus from Manson leaves us wondering if there is going to be one under par song on the album, considering there’s only one more song after this!
So finally we reach the end of this storming album, and it finishes with ‘OBSEQUEY (THE DEATH OF ART)' it’s only a very short song, featuring some piano/guitar effects at first that lead into some radio station style talking. It sounds a bit depressing and it stays that way until the end, maybe I was hoping for another rock monster of a track but it’s a nice finishing touch to an overall excellent album.
So Mazza has returned, 3 years after his smash hit ‘Holywood’ with another smash hit album. It may lack some of catchiness of Holywood at times but for 90% of this album it’s a great solid rock effort that should have a place in every rock fans cd collection. Manson fans or those new will find lots to interest them here; it’s certainly not a warning sign for a band that has been around for almost a decade now.
It's the golden age of excellent albums more like!
Advantages: No fillers Disadvantages: Absolutely Nothing
...air inducing stomp!
The Golden Age of Grotesque takes it's place next in the tracklisting next with it's incredibly odd music style which includes a burning piano being played by manson himself. The controversial (s)AINT is probably my least favourite song on the album but if you watch the video for it then you'll understand why it has become controversial. Kaboom Kaboom is a cheesy but very heavy rock song followed by slutgarden with it's techno/thrash ... ...Next up is spade with it's dark, lingering music that crashes into a big chorus about mr mansons feelings of being betrayed by a certain rose mcgowan, a very personal song. Then we have one of my favourite songs on the album Paranoir, which keeps building and building all the way through untill the screaming head pounding finale which will definately leave its mark on you. The next three tracks are the last three, The Bright Young Things, Better ...

Advantages: Original Disadvantages: Not for the easily offended
The Golden Age of Grotesque is the fifth studio album (full length) released by the self professed Antichrist Superstar. Coming nearly three years after the superb Holywood it was eagerly awaited and whilst die hard Marilyn Manson fans loved it, it received mixed reviews (see end of review for some of them).
Although this isn't Manson's best offering it's still good and packs originality and punch. Influenced by a wide variety of sources, including ... ...angry lyrics. The Golden Age of Grotesque probably isn't as controversial as previous releases but he still manages to tear down religion whilst promoting sex, drugs and violence, tongue firmly in cheek some might say! Manson has been blamed for many unfortunate incidents in the USA over the years, including the Columbine shootings. His gigs almost always attract religious fanatics protesting about his lyrical content and general persona and whilst ...

The Golden Age of Grotesque, released in 2003, was supposed to be the most thought-provoking album released by them yet. The anticipation of the launch of this album was tremendous, as Marilyn Manson claimed this was a work of art. Howvever, I cannot help but feel let down, as if the bubble of anticipation was burst rather ubruptly upon hearing it. I found tracks such as Ka-Boom Ka-Boom (8) rather a let down and uncharacteristic of Manson's other ... ...powerful meanings which were in previous albums, and giving Manson the "zing" they once had. This may be found as a good thing by others who may have found Marilyn Manson's previous albums hard listening. Despite this, songs such as mOBSCENE (3) and Use Your Fist and Not Your Mouth (5) are uplifting and more meaningful and characteristic of Manson, and almost have an "AntiChrist Superstar" feel. In my opinion this is no where near the greatest Marilyn ...

Advantages: Different Disadvantages: Not everyone's cup of tea!
Marilyn Manson is not everyone's favorite artist which is understandable, but you dismiss him like many artists he is misunderstood, having been one of thoses people who misunderstood. What I mean by that is when I first started hearing his music I thought he was a complete weirdo that had several issues, but like with most things once you start to understand the basics you begin to change your opinion i.e when Tainted Love was released I thought ... ...good kick up the backside and mad it a hit. People thought I was mad liking a song sung by a nutter like Marilyn Manson, but as I explained to them all because someone looks freaky doesn't mean they are a freak. I haven't heard every track on this album, but, what I have heard didn't scare me off. M-obscene is another good track the problem with him is that he speaks his mind he isn't afraid to tell things how they are. If you like that sort of thing ...

*Use Your fist and not your mouth: A hate filled anthem that makes you want to scream along as loud as your lungs will allow
*The Goldenage of Grotesque: This song is very tedious and bored me from my first listen although it has a very annoying way of getting stuck in your head.

Album Notes
Personnel: Marilyn Manson (vocals, guitar, saxophone, Mellotron, synthesizer, bass, drums, loops); John (guitar, strings, piano); Tim Skold (guitar, accordion, keyboards, synthesizer, bass, programming); MW Gacy (keyboards, synthesizer, loops); Ginger Fish (drums). Producers: Marilyn Manson, Tim Skold, Ben Grosse. Recorded at Doppelherz, The Mix Room, Burbank, California and Ocean Way Studios, Los Angeles, California. Marilyn Manson proudly wears his musical influences on his band's fifth studio album, where the perpetually androgynous singer and company continue their crusade of industrial rock outrage, making nods to forerunners while never losing that which is quintessentially Manson. "mOBSCENE," reeks of ANGEL DUST-era Faith No More. "Para Noir" offers a romantic agenda in grand Manson style, with little chance for radio edit status. "Better Of Two Evils" and "Your Fist And Not Your Mouth" rally with undeniable choruses while "This Is The New Shit" nails a Korn-inflected groove. The set's down-tempo title track is built around a haunting piano line, and "(s)AINT" deftly captures the Powerman 5000 style. The album track most likely to get extensive re-mixing is the incredibly catchy "Ka-boom Ka-boom." THE GOLDEN AGE OF GROTESQUE drops yet another bomb on convention, and Marilyn Manson clearly planned it that way.
