life-long dream: to create the ultimate American indie rock album. In a huge departure from his somewhat limp, lo-fi solo debut,The Golden Dis not afraid to crank up the volume and rock. From the outright thrash of album opener "Jamie Thomas" through the angst-ridden "Leave Me Alone" and into the trashy punk of "Fags + Failure", this is the sound that Blur themselves hinted at on their self-titled, international hit album. It's to Coxon's credit that none of these songs would sound out of place on albums by American indie icons such as Sonic Youth or Dinosaur Jr. And that's very high praise indeed.--Robert Burrow

Advantages: What the Blur of old would sound like in 2004 Disadvantages: Not enough stunning tracks, too many with potential
songs, which makes the album drag slightly. Humourous lyrics interjected ("very pretty and you're tanned, but i'd rather sleep with my right hand") making this the sort of song that you may hum along to, but it won't win any new fans as it doesn't stretch Coxons obvious musical or songwriting capabilities. 6.5/10
11. Don't Be A Stranger
Don't be fooled, this is not a Dina Carroll cover! Slightly faster than the previous three, it's hard to criticise a song for being bland when it includes a xylophone solo to the point where it fits in well. However, there is nothing that really grabs you and makes you want to listen to it in any other way than as part of the album. You can do better than this Graham. 5/10
12. Ribbons And Leaves
The slow song at the end of the album that many favour to end on. Piano, voice, accoustic guitar ...
Advantages: Imaginatively crafted punky tunes Disadvantages: Doesn't progress greatly from the last, slightly awkward (although paradoxically that is also a positive)
For a man who is exactly 16 years older to the day than a certain editor and is on his thirteenth album including seven Blur LP's, GrahamCoxon sounds incredibly fresh. Regarded as one of the best guitarists of his generation, Coxon has spent the last few years establishing himself as a solo artist and he finally seems to be doing it well.
Following the relatively moderate success of 2004's 'Happiness In Magazines' and offshoots 'Freakin' Out' and 'Bittersweet Bundle Of Misery', the ex-Blur guitarist has produced another album with the potential to grace the higher echelons of the charts. Album opener and first single 'Standing On My Own Again' strays little from the previous album's direction but don't take that away from a single full of wistful emptiness and unreciprocated love.
In fact the whole album has been soaked in ...
Advantages: Brilliant performance, Excellant sound quality, Packed with Extras Disadvantages: Somewhat grainy visuals at times
I bought this DVD because I am a fan of GrahamCoxon and his work with Blur. For someone like me this DVD is perfect, I think it is what any fan would want.
However, if I were just a casual indie fan with a vague knowledge of Coxon, I am not entirely sure I would pick up this DVD. That is not to say that the DVD is bad, in fact it is to say the opposite. I would not have picked up the DVD because I would have no way of knowing anything about the quality of it. This DVD received little marketing and reviews of it are hard to find.
So I am going to do what I feel is my duty as a Coxon fan and try to get a few more people to understand what is so special about the music of Coxon, and why this performance illustrates it perfectly.
The sound quality is truly awesome, it throws a bucket of clear, perfect and most importantly loud ...
Personnel: Graham Coxon (vocals, various instruments, programming); Ben Hillier (programming). THE GOLDEN D is the sophomore solo album from Graham Coxon, lead guitarist of rock act Blur. Released on his own Transcopic label, THE GOLDEN D is a heartfelt, eerie album that recalls the sound of classic indie rock acts like Sonic Youth and Pavement. The album's first cut, "Jamie Thomas," is a tribute to Coxon's favorite skateboarder and the track rocks with similar ferocity and energy. Also included are two covers ("Fame and Fortune" and "That's When I Reach For My Revolver") from Boston's post-punk outfit Mission Of Burma. Coxon wrote the remaining ten cuts on the album including highlights "My Idea Of Hell," "The Fear," and "Fags and Failure". The album's name refers to a particular chord, and the cover artwork on THE GOLDEN D is Coxon's.
Album Reviews
Uncut (8/00, p.92) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Cements his commitment to train-wreck slampunk with Sonic Yoof-oid artcore...although the prevailing mood of guitar-torching extremism is leavened with tender melancholy..." Alternative Press (11/00, p.102) - 3 out of 5 - "...A savage slamdance of noise..." CMJ (9/4/00, p.3) - "...Startling in its revelations....[He] manages to nearly replicate the musings of your average suburban Minor Threat fanatic circa '86..."
