...contained 'Walk On By', there version of the Burt Bacharach and Hal David song. as a result when the song was released it only made it to no.21.
'X-Certs' was live album released in the period between 'Black and White' and 'The Raven'. 'the Raven' was another success and produced the song 'duchess'. their career reached its lowest point after this and released two non album songs which just made the top 40, 'Bear Cage' and 'who Wants The World?' and to top it all while in America all their equipment which was customised was stolen.
'The Gospel According To The Meninblack' was recorded at this time and released in 1981. No tracks from the album were released, but their second album of the year 'La Folie' contained the song that most people think of when you mention the Stranglers, 'Golden Brown', was released at the begining of 1982...

Advantages: A cheap way to get all the hit singles on one CD Disadvantages: Some weak tracks and it is out of date now
...This was released in 1996 and it features all the biggest Simply Red hits from the UK. The songs are in random order where it might have been better to have them listed chronologically.
Here's the list.
1. Holding Back The Years
2. Money's Too Tight To Mention
3. Right Thing
4. It's Only Love
5. New Flame
6. You've Got It
7. If You Don't Know Me By Now
8. Stars
9. Something Got Me Started
10. Thrill Me
11. For Your Babies
12. So Beautiful
13. Angel
14. Fairground
The first track "Holding Back The Years" is a bad start to the album. It's a long moody track that I've never liked and it seems endless. The singing is superb - Mick's full range is on display - but this isn't the most cheery start to a hits collection.
The classic "Money's Too Tight To Mention" is next. This was Simply Red's first hit from 1986...

Advantages: Plently of great indie anthems Disadvantages: A few weaker tracks - Dolpin '99 and Mark
...A greatest hits collection from the much underrated 90's indie band fronted by Rick Witter. A very good album featuring all of the band's biggest hits.
If you're a fan of Britpop acts like Oasis, Cast, Elastica, Sleeper etc you should definately get this album.
I have never bought any Shed Seven records before this and was surprised at just how many tracks I recognised. There are several great sing-a-long anthems like "Getting Better" and "Going for Gold" as well as reflective ballads like "Ocean Pie".
I would recommend this album over the other compilation of Shed Seven's songs "the collection" as Going for Gold includes the big singles "Chasing Rainbows" and "On Standby" which do not feature on "the collection".
A truely classic Britpop album....
