The Golden Years of Jazz Volume 5
Review of Golden Years Of Jazz Vol.5, The - Various Artists by  Martinscholes

Advantages: Great jazz tunes from the Golden Age
Disadvantages: None

...This is real jazz, from the real Golden Age of Jazz. It's got the pace, the rhythm, the fluid trumpet playing, the relentlessly enthusiastic, rolling piano playing and the clear diction of some excellent singing of vocalists who could not only hold a tune, but who could capture your heart and soul, too… There's musicians with such great names as Muggsy Spanier, Meade Lux Lewis, King Oliver and Sidney Bechet. You do not get musicians called Muggsy nowadays. I wonder why? As well as straight out jazz such as the Dippermouth blues, there's also the dreamy and melodic April in Paris from Charlie Parker. Some jazz aficionados reckon that Charlie Parker eventually sold out. Well, perhaps he did. But some of his earlier work still stands the test of time. Jack Teagarden is on this CD, with So Many Times, a rather nice, well... Read review

Frankie say pleasure is timeless
Review of Welcome To The Pleasure Dome - Frankie Goes To Hollywood by  harj123

Advantages: classic 80s double album with some brilliant songs
Disadvantages: some of the cover versions are so-so..

...Welcome to the pleasuredome,a double album from scouse band Frankie goes to hollywood is one of the top Lps of the 80s.It is produced extravgantly by Trevor Horn of Buggles fame.Horns epic production mixing dance with rock produces a unique sound for frankie different from other 80s bands. The cd is basically the same as the original vinyl version with the exception of two extra instrumental tracks.Overall there are 16 tracks on pleasuredome, eight original songs from the band ,4 cover versions and 4 instrumental tracks. It is a thrilling album getting you up and dancing and like all rollercoaster rides there are dips mainly in the cover versions some of which are only so-so. Frankie were from liverpool and fronted by two male gay singers Holly johnson[also the main writer for the bands material] and paul rutherford. On drums was peter... Read review

Frankie say - it's OK
Review of Welcome To The Pleasure Dome - Frankie Goes To Hollywood by  rsmith

Advantages: 3 or 4 classic songs
Disadvantages: Too many songs that are filler, or now sound dated

...1984 turned out to be the year, not of George Orwell, but of… Frankie. You couldn’t avoid all the “Frankie say…” T-shirts. The single “Relax”, banned by the BBC, started it all, shooting to Number 1 in the Charts, staying there for 5 weeks, and it remained in the charts until 48 weeks later. Apart from the hype and the publicity, the song itself is a great piece of explosive music, produced and transformed by Trevor Horn (the song had been kicking around a while before he got his hands on it, and I have heard an earlier version, which was frankly nothing that special). Even though the band insisted it was just a dance song, “Relax” was clearly about gay sex – very threatening in those days. Frankie Goes to Hollywood then released the album “Welcome... Read review
