Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born on February 20th 1988 in Saint Michael , Barbados. She is currently twenty years of age. She received her big break in 2003 at the age of fifteen when her friend saw music producer Evan Rogers on vacation in Barbados and introduced Rihanna to him. She made a demo and they sent it off to music producers in America , including Jay-z. Soon after she was signed to the record label she is still signed to today; Def Jam Recordings. Rihanna first gained fame when she burst onto the music scene in 2005 at the age of seventeen with her debut single 'Pon De Replay'. Rihanna has been compared to Beyonce , although I think that she has her own style. Rihanna was even once described as 'The Next Britney '. Rihanna just keeps better and better and has recognisably improved since her last album.
Good Girl Gone Bad is the third album from popstar Rihanna. Her first album was Music Of The Sun , and her second , A Girl Like Me. Good Girl Gone Bad was released on 4th June 2007 in Europe. The album was re-released in 2008 , under the title : Good Girl Gone Bad ; Reloaded. There are twelve tracks on the album ; four which have been released as singles. Running time of the album is 46 minutes and two seconds.
The cover of Good Girl
Gone Bad is in black and white. The background is dark and features a photo of Rihanna leaning backwards across the cover. In the centre reads ' Rihanna' in dark capitals with ' Good Girl Gone Bad' written beneath in a smaller font. This is definately a dramatic cover!
Here I will give you a brief description of some of the songs on the album.
* Umberella * This song is different to that of Rihanna's other material. Jay-Z plays a part in this song , with his rapping during the introduction. This is a catchy tune and also quite repetitive at times (ella...ella....ella!) , and therefore you could see why some people might find it annoying. This is one of my favourite songs on the album. Although at first I wasn't too keen on it , however it soon grew on me , especially as I kept hearing it on the radio due to it's huge success where it stayed at number one for several weeks in the UK single Charts. This is a song that stays in your head. Umberella looks at rain in a postive way!
* Please Don't Stop The Music * What a great party tune! This is one of my favourite tracks to listen to before going out! This song is a very upbeat and is a popular club anthem!
* Shut Up and Drive * Another song of Rihanna's which I didn't like to begin with although one I had heard it over and over again on the radio , I liked it , kept hearing it and in the end I absolutely loved it! This song is so different! It is a totally different sound to Rihanna's previous songs. Shut Up and Drive has a 'rocky' feel to it. It reminds me of a Destiny's Child song , where the girl is independent and in control. A catchy song.
* Cry * This is one of my favourite songs on the album. It's quite similar to Unfaithful , with the piano playing in the background. With this song , I like how it sounds like Rihanna is putting all her emotions into it. I love the chorus. The lyrics are effective and cleverly written. I like the phrase 'Got all the symptoms of a girl with a broken heart'. It is a great song to listen to if you have just broken up with a boyfriend/girlfriend. A catchy song!
* Breakin Dishes * This song has a funny beginning. I didn't like the beginning which made me wantto hit the 'next' button on my CD player , but I decided to continue listen to it. This song has a lot of attitude and a strong beat. Rihanna sounds 'tough' in this song and I wouldn't want to mess with her! I don't really like this song , it's too 'in yer face' and too shouty for my liking. I can't really understand what she's singing about either as it's not that clear. I can understand the 'Breakin Dishes' bit though! I'm afraid it's a thumbs down from me for this song.
* Good Girl Gone Bad * This song has an upbeat feel to it. Beings as this is the end song I expected it to be great , especially as it is also has the same title as the album. I don't think this song reaches a peak ; it just doesn't build up to anything.
* Push Up On Me * The beginning is quite repetive with repeats of "We Break". The first verse reminds me of the first verse of 'Please Don't Stop The Music'. The layout is similar , without that club feel to it. The song is catchy but it is not strong enough for my liking ; it's far too basic.
* Hate That I Love You * A soft ballad about love , featuring Ne-Yo. This song is so sweet you've just gotta love it. It is romantic. I also think, from watching the video of this , that Rihanna and Ne-yo would make such a cute couple. When I first heard this song , I thought it had already been released , as I seem to know the tune from somewhere. Hate That I Love You , isn't one of the albums strongest track , but it is a cool song to relax to.
I would definitely recommend Good Girl Gone Bad to all music lovers. This album comes under many genres ; Pop , Pop Rock , R n B , Dance , Electronica … so if you like music from these genres then you will love this album. This album is the new Rihanna. It is very different to her other albums and each song has it's own unique style. Because the songs are so different , it means that I can listen to it over and over again and never get bored of hearing it. I like how effective her lyrics are , and how her songs are about things her fans can relate to. I am glad that Umberella was the first track released off the album as this is what made me buy this album and I am so glad that I did because it is brilliant. Although there are one or two weak tracks on this album , they are soon forgotten about when you hear the rest of it and thereforeI think this album is a great CD ! Perfect for a sleepover or to listen to whilst getting ready to go partyin! . It is a teen-must have! This album is also makes a great summer CD!
