**Introduction**
When Rihanna released her debut single I thought long and hard about how exactly she got a record deal as I thought she had a terrible voice and her songs were basically rubbish but roll on a couple of years and you notice a real change especially in her vocal talent which goes to show you what a decent vocal coach can do for your career.
Rihanna has become one of the most talked about artists to come out in the last couple of years. Despite only being 20 years old she has already released three massively successful albums and has worked with many of the most sort after producers in the genre including Jay Z, Timbaland and Neyo. The 20 year old Barbadian holds with Beyonce Knowles the record for most female solo number one singles in this decade so far. Here is my review of her third and latest album.
**Good Girl Gone Bad**
The Third album from Rihanna was released on 30th May 2007 and has featured a whopping eight singles with four of them turning into number one hits. She worked with well known producers Stargate, Jay Z and Neyo amongst other lesser known producers including Evan Rogers, Carl Sturken and Christopher "Tricky" Stewart.
1.) Umbrella
This was the first single
from the album and was a hugely talked about track with people either loving or hating it, At the time it was out I really could not listen to it for more than a minute without getting annoyed but I listen to it now and can appreciate it as a good club track which it was huge at the time in clubs.
2.) Push Up on Me
Amazingly this uptempo track was co written with Lionel Richie, It has a very catchy feel and has a vibe that would go down well in a club. One of her better uptempo tracks. A very groovy track with a great flow.
3.) Don't Stop the music
This is a funky track which will make you dance till you can dance no more. Some very catchy loops create a great sound and the Interpolation of Michael Jackson's Wanna be startin something works suprisingly well.
This is another very funky track, It has a great backing vocal and the fast pace makes the track all the more appealing. Stick this on and you will be hard pushed not to tap your feet to the beat. Excellent uptempo track.
5.) Shut up and Drive
This track is a very funky uptempo club classic. I am not that keen on it but can see it's appeal as it is a very catchy track which has the beat needed to be a club hit. She has done better uptempo tracks though.
6.) Hate that I love you
This is a duet with Neyo and is a mid tempo ballad which seems to be where Neyo turned a corner and actually started showing his potential more consistently. To me this track seems to be about a relationship that isnt working but both of them hate the fact that they love them so much but it just won't work out between them.
7.) Say It
This is Rihanna but it has the kind of style of Beyonce Knowles, A very decent midtempo ballad with Rihanna showing just how much her voice has improved since her debut single. Say it is a very decent track indeed with a light melodic feel.
8.) Sell Me Candy
This is one of the more forgettable tracks on the album and more like her previous material from her first two albums where she hadnt found her best yet. Not one of the more instant Rihanna tracks.
9.) Lemme get that
This track features production from Timbaland and is co written by Jay Z, this is one of the worst tracks on the album and is one of the rare moments when a track touched by Timbaland does not turn to Gold. A very forgettable uptempo track.
10.) Rehab
This track features Justin Timberlake but for me there is not enough of him on this track, A decent track which could be better if there was more of Justin Timberlake's mark on it. It's a little repetetive but Not a bad track though.
11.) Question Existing
This has an interesting opening thanks to the slow electro sounds which lead to a fantastic Michael Jackson like beat and Rihanna's vocals flow well throught the track. A very interesting track which is one of the best on the album.
12.) Good girl gone bad
The title track is a very decent track which is a warning to men that if you continue to your woman badly then they will be bad too. This is a very good midtempo ballad which has elements of what makes Take A bow so good.
13.) Disturbia
This is an incredibly catchy club classic with one of the best and catchiest chorus' of the decade so far. It wasnt until I heard the chorus that I actually realised I liked this track. If you have heard this track you will know what I mean when I say What a chorus!!!!!!. This track was suprisingly co written by Chris Brown.
14.) Take a Bow
This is the slower equivalent of what Disturbia is to the uptempo track. A fantastic tirade against an ex after they cheated several times but still want you back.
15.) If I never see your face again
When I first heard Maroon 5 I thought they seemed okay but now I feel they are really annoying and This is not a great track. It starts awfully and never recovers. Rihanna fails to bring this track to respectable level.
**Overall**
To say this was a fantastic album would be wrong but on the other hand to say it was a bad album would be wrong too. Granted there are some bad tracks but it looks like Rihanna has actually found her talent. She has become a very good singer when her voice was a major letdown when she started. Keep looking out for her and she may produce a fantastic album in the next few years that actually proves all the talk about her is true.
