balladeer would find much to admire in Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, the best album he has ever made. The track listing reads like an early Greatest Hits collection; it contains not only the original version of "Candle In The Wind" but such raucous and gleeful songs as "Bennie And The Jets", "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" and "Your Sister Can't Twist (But She Can Rock 'n' Roll)". From the impassioned opening medley of "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" to the gentle closer, "Harmony", there are few duff moments among these 17 tracks. "All The Young Girls Love Alice" is a savage but wry tale of lesbian exploitation, and the title song is just short of lovely. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is both a joy for fans and a genuine surprise for the uninitiated. --David Bennun

Advantages: Classic tunes Disadvantages: Some mysogyny, however it's spelt!
I think this is Elton?s best album, even though it was originally a double, there are very few songs that sound like filler. It?s very 70s, with glam (?Bennie & the Jets? ); cod-reggae (?Jamaica jerk off?); and songs which were probably quite influential in their way - like The Rubettes (?Your sister can?t twist but she can rock n roll?) and many of the uptempo numbers sound like Meatloaf.
There are many musical styles on here. The start of ?Saturday night?s all right for fighting? could be The Who (they later recorded their own version of it for the ?Two rooms? tribute). There?s a good proportion of ballads, too - ?I?ve seen that movie too?, ?Roy Rogers? ?Harmony?, and of course the classics ?Candle in the wind? and ?Goodbyeyellowbrickroad?.
The album starts with the marathon ?Funeral for a friend / Love lies bleeding? (at over ...

example. One of my favourite albums is EltonJohn's 'Goodbye Yellowbrick Road' & it falls into this category. Five years into his career, he & Bernie Taupin wrote this double album & I often consider it to be their very best work.
I know he has written many good albums since (and some dire ones) but this is the one that stands head & shoulders above all others.
Elton cannot write lyrics & Bernie Taupin cannot write music, but together they have created some of the world's finest songs in the past 40 years. Goodbye Yellowbrick Road is a double album featuring 18 songs all produced by the late Gus Dudgeon. It features Elton's band members at the time, Nigel Olsen on drums, the late Dee Murray on bass guitar & Davey Johnston on lead guitar. Del Newman was called in to do the orchestral arrangements & David Hentschel featured on the ARP ...

I’m currently in the process of collecting all my favourite vinyl albums on CD and finding some real bargains in the process. My latest acquisition at a mere £4.99 from Our Price is EltonJohn’s classic double album ‘GoodbyeYellowBrickRoad’.
I can vividly remember buying the original version on a day trip to London, just before Christmas in 1973. I went with some of my friends on the train, no mean feat in those days from the Shropshire backwaters and bought it from what I believe to be Virgin’s first music shop in Oxford Street. Nearly thirty years ago – doesn’t time fly! And yet the music and the memories are as fresh as ever.
Goodbye Yellowbrick Road was the peak of Elton's fabulous ride through the 70s. The album is as enchanting and nostalgic as ‘The Wizard of Oz’ from ...
