...99 from Our Price is Elton John’s classic double album ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’.
I can vividly remember buying the original version on a day trip to London, just before Christmas in 1973. I went with some of my friends on the train, no mean feat in those days from the ... Read review

balladeer would find much to admire inGoodbye Yellow Brick Road, the best album he has ever made. The track listing reads like an early Greatest Hits collection; it contains not only the original version of "Candle In The Wind" but such raucous and gleeful songs as "Bennie And The Jets", "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" and "Your Sister Can't Twist (But She Can Rock 'n' Roll)". From the impassioned opening medley of "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" to the gentle closer, "Harmony", there are few duff moments among these 17 tracks. "All The Young Girls Love Alice" is a savage but wry tale of lesbian exploitation, and the title song is just short of lovely.Goodbye Yellow Brick Roadis both a joy for fans and a genuine surprise for the uninitiated. --David Bennun

Advantages: Great music, wonderful value, excellent lyrics Disadvantages: None whatsoever
...fresh as ever. Goodbye Yellowbrick Road was the peak of Elton's fabulous ride through the 70s. The album is as enchanting and nostalgic as ‘The Wizard of Oz’ from which the title is derived. At this stage in his career it really looked as if he and Bernie Taupin were going to be as influential as Lennon and McCartney, somehow it never quite worked out like that and I believe this album portrayed Elton’s music at its zenith. The ... ...tomorrow to call” Goodbye Yellowbrick Road is a fantastic album. Elton's life went in new directions, and Bernie's themes and lyrics followed, but in my opinion “GoodbyeYellowbrick Road” remains their best, and at £4.99 a really good bargain. If you aren't quite sure if you do or don't like Elton, this is a great album to buy as it has a good bit of variety of his diverse style and brilliant for listening to in the car. --------------------------------------------- ...

Advantages: the songs, the playing Disadvantages: None
...this fine double album. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is undoubtedly one of his finest creations, with probably only Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy a couple of years later a serious rival in his entire catalogue.
In 1973, Elton John and his lyricist co-writer Bernie Taupin were probably at the peak of their form. They'd been around together around four years and had refined and developed their style through a number of patchy albums, Empty ... ...Wind

...his music. The album ‘ Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ is an example of Elton John at his best. The sad thing is that you are then saying his best was almost 30 years ago.
First though let’s get ‘Candle In The Wind’ out of the way. The original track is fine but the Princess Diana rework must now be considered a huge mistake. (It was rumoured there was going to be a Mother Teresa version called ‘Sandals In The Bin’).
... ...and made it a ‘one-size-fits-all’ tribute song, just alter the words to suit the latest tragedy. Ok I’ve got that off my chest and let’s continue with the better stuff.
The album starts with the classic John track ‘Funeral for A Friend’ slipping straight into ‘Love Lies Bleeding’. Love lies bleeding is pure Elton John, a track that shouts out to be listened to. For those who have been fortunate, as ...

Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you on the treadmill
And they made you change your name
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
