Whoa! This album is so laid back it's lying down with its feet sticking up in the air! ...Damon Albarn of 'Blur' fame, Gorillaz are actually billed as a cartoon band featuring several unsavoury looking characters. Despite that they are scheduled to be playing live later this year though I'm not quite sure how if they are cartoon characters?!
Anyway, back to their debut album, it took a couple of listens for me
but now I love it although I may be seen as biased being a great fan of
Blur/Damon Albarn. In fact, this album reminds me greatly ... ...here we go with a few highlight and lowlights for you, although, to be fair, this album holds little in variation, both in pace and style.
"Tomorrow Comes Today" is typically laid back and plodding with Damon sounding very tired and sexy throughout to those of us that way inclined!
In contrast "New Genius", like many of the tracks, sees Damon in high
pitched mode against a casual funky beat.
Probably the best known track here is the debut single ...

Advantages: Fab Disadvantages: A few filler tracks.
...I can report that the Gorillaz in reality are just as wanky as in concept. A friend of mine went to "interview" them a week or two ago, quite an experience by all accounts.First he was made to sign an agreement that he would only write about the band as if they were real people, making no reference to the fact they were cartoon characters. He would treat the music with similar reverence. He was not allowed to say who the band actually were, or who ... ...to hate them in principle, Gorillaz have one astonishing trump card, and it goes by the name of Damon Albarn. Now, it is entirely within the spirit of this band that I should write a review of their album that doesn't even mention the tunes until the third paragraph, and I ask those of you who may want to rate me down on that basis to reconsider. But this is an album review, and the tunes are the thing. The entire band is a result of a collaboration ...

Advantages: Albarn's quirky characteristic style Disadvantages: A bit too quirky for about 90% of the music population
...opinion on Orf!
The Gorillaz album is a definate strange one - and it will either grab you with a giggle or make you hate it straight away. I am a real lover of strange little noises and irrelevant sentances stuck in for fun (they usually have meaning to the performers and absolutely no-one else but hey, I like 'em). The members of the band are those fabulous cartoon creations that are along the lines of uncouth Manga characters - you will have ... ...you can go to the Gorillaz website (www.gorillaz.com) and check out the other versions of the albums most popular songs, the visit is a little slow but really good fun, someone with a brilliant sense of humour came up with this band! It shouldn't be too much of a surprise to learn that Damon Albarn provides the lead vocals for 2D, and if you've ever REALLY listened to Blur albums you shouldn't be surprised with the wacky and surreal effect that goes ...

Advantages: Everything, Damon Albarn, Disadvantages: Experimental, Deranged (good or bad? who knows)
...Aparently this will be the Gorillaz next release, and I think it will change alot of peoples minds about the band and their lyrical ability. 'New Genious' is another strange tune. Good music and bizarre lyrics, you will sing along, even if you have no idea what hes saying. Dont let it put you off, its snazzy, jazzy and funky. 'Clint Eastwood' is the song that made Gorillaz what they are, famous. I'm not too sure how long this song has been about, ... ...on the album, its basically Gorillaz using music instead of Damon Albarn. I dont quite understand the reasoning for this song, as it progresses Damon comes into it as a speaking voice. A very curious inclusion. 'Rock the House' is different. It uses the soul like sounds of the man affectionatly known as "the bloke who does the rapping in Clint Eastwood." Slightly more comedy, and the music stays brilliant. This is Huggy Bear in a limo with leather ...

Advantages: mmm, NONE! Disadvantages: The whole Album!
Gorillaz is the Album by the band of the same name, Gorillaz. Towards the end of 2000 there was a lot of hype about the release of the album, as the lead singer was Damon Albarn of blur. But they were not to go by their own names, the band were to go by the name s of 2D, Noodle, Murdoc and Russel.
2001 came and I was looking forward to the release of GORILLAZ by the Gorillaz, and I ordered it in advance, so as to get it on the day of release. Then ... ...track it was as well, excellent lyrics, an people who like all types of music liked it! But after loads of airplay, the song got very repetitive, and a re-mix version was used. It then started to get annoying.
Finally the CD was released and what a disappointment it was! The only track that anyone really liked was that of “Clint Eastwood”, well from what my mates and me can tell anyway!
The CD consists of 15 tracks, plus a hidden track ...

Advantages: original / electronic and good! Disadvantages: language in parts (not noticeable)
...If you have read any of my other reviews you will know that I am undoubtedly a rock fanatic! I love all sorts of music, but rock has to be my favourite. It is obvious that 'Gorillaz' is not rock music, but I felt I had to review it at some point because for one thing it is so imaginative and unlike anything done before and also it was the first album I purchased myself! It wasn't the first album I owned, but to purchase your first CD there will always be something special about it, and that is very true in my opinion of Gorillaz!
Gorillaz first album named simply 'Gorillaz' was there debut album released way, way back in 2001 and took the world by storm. Gorillaz I wouldn't say did this entirely by there music but by their original way they present themselves. Unconventionally, they do not present themselves as themselves...
