along with his soft, lyrical approach, there was still something slightly clownish about the trombone, all exaggerated slides and rasps. Teagarden also played and sang the blues more naturally than any white man had done before. These 18 numbers come from his early career, between 1929 and 1934, when he was still something of a juvenile wonder. Everybody wanted him to play on their sessions and he was eager to oblige. Mostly he is surrounded by his young contemporaries, future jazz stars such as Benny Goodman, Jimmy Dorsey and Glenn Miller. The numbers include such jazz standards as "Basin Street Blues", "Dinah" and "Davenport Blues", along with ballads like the title song and the beautiful "A Hundred Years From Today". An excellent selection, full of surprise and variety. --Dave Gelly
Advantages: Blues, blues, and more blues Disadvantages: None, unless you don't like the blues.
...Blues For Greeny is a dedication to Peter Green, a blues guitarist, who Gary Moore saw in 1967 first, then on a number of subsequent occasions, and actually bought his guitar off him, thus the title of the album. The Blues are totally guitar-dependent, so if you're not much into that......WHY??! No words can describe the feeling, the juices that flow through ones veins when sampling a well-written blues song.....bliss.
1 - If You Be My Baby
Starts with a jovial , jaunty guitar riff that draws you right into the upbeat mood of the song, despite the title. Has you singing along word for word.
'If you be my baby, tell you what I'll do
I'll give you so much lovin, you gotta love me too'
2 - Long Grey Mare
Not too sure if this is actually about the animal above, or disguised to represent something else. Judging by the lyrics...

Advantages: The wonderful tracks My Man, Don't Explain etc Disadvantages: The dialogue interupts musical flow
...Lady Sings The Blues premiered to an eager, anticipating audience in October 1972. The public flocked in droves to the cinemas to see this much-hyped film, whilst critics watched intensley and eagerly sharpened their pencils.
Soul singer and Motown legend, Diana Ross controversially took the role of the tortured Jazz legend, Billie Holiday and deservedly won wide critical acclaim for her harrowing and riviting performance in the film which subsequently gained her an oscar nomination (though Diana sadly lost out to Liza Minnelli for Cabaret - people claimed this was down to Berry Gordy's over-kill campaign to get her to win where Berry sent various extravagent gifts to members of the comittee which was merely perceived as a ploy to get her to win).
Critics were instantly silenced on hearing the movies quintessential and divine...

Advantages: Decent entertainment Disadvantages: Non-fans of the show will just think they've ruined the songs
...from buying "The Simpsons Sing the Blues" when I saw it on sale in Asda for £3, as I figured that the amount of entertainment it would provide would outweigh the number of duff notes they would hit.
The album opens with "Do The Bartman" which was a number 1 single way back in 1991, well before "The Simpsons" had become as popular in the UK as it is now. It's certainly a very dated song now, being the kind of pop-dance-rap hybrid that was so popular at the time. The song was supposedly written by Michael Jackson and there are a couple of "Thriller" sounding moments and Michael Jackson references which suggest the man has a better sense of humour and more of a tendency to poke fun at himself than I would previously have credited him with. This may well be familiar to fans of the show, especially as the video was an extra in the 4th...
