Maybe it's the fusion of folk and rock music that made it difficult for me to listen to this the first time round. They are strange bedfellows, but this album proves that you can do anything with the right melody and the right riff. I'm not really a muso myself, but there are moments when this album moved me deeply, and still does. Buckley's voice has a haunting quality to it, that works to best effect on Hallelujah, but works its way through the whole album. I can't really imagine anyone not liking this album, apart from maybe die-hard nu-skate-metal-whatever types. This album shows its craftsmanship, and feels like a project that was lovingly completed by Buckley, who died young. He even does a requiem - and I mean the traditional, full-on church choir rendition. It's breathtaking, in a way I have never found church music (nor ever expect to). There's not many people who can get away with that. This is an album for solitude and sadness and hopeless romantics everywhere.
