The late and great Jeff Buckley, son of legend Tim Buckley, recorded only one studio album before his untimely and tragic death. Buckley has one of those voices that captivates you and draws you in to the point where you become addicted and hypnotised. Instead of reviewing every track, I am just going to talk of my favourites.
'Mojo Pin' the album's opener is a misleading track. It starts off with a tragic and sad guitar and is a haunting ballad of how Jeff is missing his love, before it goes into a complete rock out anthem of Jeff pleading 'Please, please, come back to me' before almost exploding with pain. His angst and distress is obvious, as is his fantastic guitar skills.
'Grace' is a song I still haven't completely grasped. {Someone please help me!} I think it's about a famous woman named Grace, who is dying, but will 'Wait in the fire’ - this is very catchy and almost pop-like, and Jeff holds one of his longest notes on this. It starts off almost happy, you could see it playing in the background of some happy-go-lucky teen movie, before it takes a dark and sinister twist, with even darker lyrics.
One of my next favourites is my favourite song ever. Seriously, I could listen to this endlessly, every day for the rest of my life. Many have described Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' as the album's highlight, and who am I to disagree?
The song is lonely, just Jeff with his guitar, and is full of metaphors and naked lyrics. I am going to post some of my favourites, and what I believe they mean:
The speaker is addressing a significant other, perhaps. It's an honest line with a tone that is on the border of sarcasm and sadness.
'I used to live alone before I knew ya.'
I think any previous metaphors stop here and instead this is a literal statement to demonstrate independence.
'There was a time when you let me know What's really going on below But now you never show that to me, do ya?'
This is a tell-tale sign of a dying relationship. When you don't feel comfortable telling your partner exactly how you feel, the days left in the relationship are numbered. Many have said that they haven't seen this idea presented so explicitly in a song lyric before. And I agree.
'Well maybe there is a God above But all I've ever learned from love Is how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya And it's not a cry that you hear at night It's not somebody who's seen the light It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah.'
But even this awareness is lonely and forlorn. The singer is saying, it's not a glorified, happy Hallelujah, nor is it a cry of pain and despair - love is just cold and it's broken. This is perhaps one of the saddest lyrics I have ever come across.
I strongly recommend this album to anyone, and for everyone to check out http://www.jeffbuckley.com and read on more of him. You can also listen to the whole album online, so have a listen before you decide to buy! I got this in Virgin Mega stores for £5.99, so have a rummage and I'm sure you'll find a great bargain.

This really is such a fantatastic album, it's a shame more people don't know about it. My favourite track is Lover, you should have come over - it's abolutely sublime!
