track "Sookie Sookie", Grant Green has been enjoying a revival of popularity. Blue Note records released this compilation of the guitarist to catch the interest. So of course "Sookie Sookie" is here in it's original 11-minute three-second glory. As are other funk faves "Talkin' About JC" and "Windjammer", which amply show why Green is such an influence on acid jazz. Certainly on thisBest ofBlue Note have picked the more groove-based numbers from his 1965-72 work with the label.Street Funkis a fun package, ideal for summer evenings. It's perfect for those not familiar with his playing apart maybe from the odd sampled riff, or those who have heard the respect paid to him by contemporary jazz musicians. True, Green's output went further than soul-jazz and it would be wrong just to tag him the father, god-father, or what-ever familial reference you wish to make, of the current jazz trend. But then even if this compilation doesn't tell the whole story it's still a great introduction. --Phil Brett

Advantages: Groundbreaking young swing singer with an amazing voice Disadvantages: You wont be able to take it out of the cd player!
...If you are looking for a listen to anytime cd then this is for you. Perfect for all moods and occasions New Vintage sees Peter Grant putting his swing on songs old and new. There is a deep richness to his voice which belies his young years and he sings every song with empathy and understanding.
This album truly has something for everyone with classic covers such as Joanna, Spooky, On Days Like These and The Girl From Ipanema.
Tony Hatch, who originaly penned Joanna for Scott Walker said of Grant: "Peter's version of Joanna is simply outstanding." I would have to agree. This is a great rack to open with as it shows the range and richness of his voice.
Another great standard is On Days Like These which featured in the film, The Italian Job. It is the kind of song which draws to mind the days of the good life, 1950's New York, red...

Advantages: Some lovely new songs and new versions of classics Disadvantages: Hard to sing along as Amy's vocal range is quite low!
...This is one of my all time favourite Christmas CD's. I have had this album for a long time and it comes out every year!
Yes, there is the usual new versions of old songs, but the songs that are penned by Amy Grant are wonderful. I have actually been able to gain strength from the words of these songs and have used them in daily readings for myself and other people. I come from a Christian background and I've really found the lyrics on this album to be helpful to me personally.
Musically, there are some fabulous backings, and every song can be sung along to time and time again.
This is one of the best Christmas albums you are every likely to hear, and please Amy do some more, I know these songs too well now!...

Advantages: a wonderful return of an american master Disadvantages: lyrics
..., the frightfully gifted prodigal son who, throughout mountains of PCP and cocaine, never came home. Stevie Wonder, the golden child who, through the power of his moog and his imagination, took the frenetic joy of the revival to Neptune.
I Can't Stop, Green's first full-length secular album in 26 years, succeeds in both showing how powerful and real the myth of Al Green is and in showing how the myth can differ from the artist as well. It not only shows why he is considered as, arguably, the greatest soul artist of all time, but also the full range of the gifts that made him mythic in nature, as well as the deeply human element of his art that has compelled people to it for over three decades. Those looking for the master of controlled sensuality and nearly unbearable sexual tension that created hit after breathtaking hit in the '70s will leave...
