Grave Dancer's Union, Soul Asylum's sixth studio recording, marks their transition from garage rock punksters to million selling alternative rock stars.
Unlike most of their early work "GDU" is filled with slower, more melodic ballads (the best of which is the radio hit "Runaway Train") and their move into the mainstream not only paid off commercially but artisitcally, but still rocks T he album manages to fit in well with the masses of alternative "Grunge" rock at the time but still maintains a consistent quality and individual sound.
A solid album and a valuable contribution to the early nineties alt rock movement which keeps it's own unique style (mainly through Dave Pirner's passionate delivery of fairly standard Grunge lyrics. A strong drum beat throughout keeps the album moving along and the guitar riffs and solos are all fairly high standard and make the songs stand out from the crowd of other Post-Grunge hangers on who jumped on the Alt Rock Bandwaggon.
The album offers a balance between harder rocking tracks (but not too rocking for radio) and slower more sentimental ballads
Harldy up to the standard of Pearl Jam or Nirvana, but a highly reccommended buy for "Grunge" fans looking for some similar material
