There is no doubt that Grease is one of the most successful musical feature films of all time. Over the years many people have covered the songs sung by the cast, including John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. This time it’s the talents of the ska-punkers from Gainesville, Less Than Jake to put their twist on the Grease songs.
The songs that are covered are:
1. Summer Nights 2. You’re the one that I want 3. Look at me I’m Sandra Dee 4. Greased Lightening 5. Hopelessly Devoted to you 6. Blue Moon 7. Beauty School Dropout 8. We go Together
The CD that I purchased is actually a repress of the original CD and can be bought in the UK for around £15 (as if) or from the States, online, for around $13 or £8. I would try to buy it online from the States, as £15 is quite expensive when the CD is only around 15 minutes long.
The story about the record goes that Less Than Jake said they were going to do a Grease thing! Several years later they finish it, after a lot of touring etc… This album then goes out of print (or what ever CD do when they are not produced) and ever since then Less Than Jake got so many inquiries about it that they re-released it, earlier on this year (This is all explained, kind of, in the inlay). The cover also gets a make over with new cartoon pictures of the band on the back of the CD case and what looks like two of the band on the cover of the CD (posing as John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John).
This CD brings new life to the Grease songs and a whole new audience to the movie, however I wouldn’t see it again once is quite enough for me! This CD should be bought by any fan of Punk, Ska-punk, Less Than Jake as it is Less Than Jake in classic form (and is actually quite funny).
