...OK, here's an easy target: a sixties pop band with a silly name, a bit of froth, a bit of fun, a five-minute wonder, pop puppets dangling on a string, a bass player called DOZY? Oh dear of dear, here's another load of crap not worth the paper it's printed on. Right? Actually, ye who sneer and carp, wrong. Let's have a bit of history. As Dave Dee and the Bostons, this band had already built up a reputation for crystal-clear vocals and tackle-threatening harmonies long before they had a sniff at a contract. Like the Beatles, they did that thing in Germany, and were already old hands on the circuit before Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley saw something extra there and, basically, took over. Good morning freedom (Blue Mink) Young gifted & black (Bob & Marcia) In the summertime (Mungo Jerry) Up around the bend (Creedence C' Revival) Snake in the grass (Dave, Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich) Neanderthal man (Hotlegs) She sold me magic (Lou Christie) Come & get it (Badfinger) Love of the common people (Nicky Thomas) Signed sealed delivered (Stevie Wonder) It's all in the game (Four Tops) Yellow river (Lou Christie) The highlights of this album are 'My baby loves loving', 'United we stand' & 'I can't tell the bottom form the top' which brings out the best in Elton's singing. The original version of 'Spirit in the sky' by Norman Greenbaum is one of my favourites & although Elton's version isn't so good its no fault of his, as his vocals are spot on but the backing track is weak. ...Who/What In a world where Swing Out Sister have released a new album, Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick & Titch release a greatest hits and Glasvegas unleash their mighty debut, I was at a loss at what to write about. So, for the sake of badness, here once again, inspired by (or jumping on the bandwagon of) Take That's miraculous comeback, are New Kids on the Block. However, they aint new, they're no kids and far from being 'on' the block, it's clear that by now they've been round it a few times. Still, for the sake of nostalgia, let's have a giggle. Highlights Where do I begin? The moody new attitude? The sultry mature looks? Or the really quite titter-inspiring song titles? '2 In The Morning', 'Grown Man' (with the Pussycat Dolls for the sake of all that was holy), 'Click, Click, Click' or heaven help us and and roll away... Read review
