Advantages: Startlingly Clear and Complex Guitar Heaven. Disadvantages: Bland First Half
Minus the bear are another band formed by members of other groups, in a sound experiment and, as some of the song titles give away, a lyrical exploration too.
The sound is full, contented, and very satisfying, with low basslines and high guitar parts, coupled with sometimes spoken sometimes sung vocals. The vocal melodies are evolved from and certainly revolve around the twisting and turning guitar riffs, and while they may not fit the definition of cathy, the emphasis given to some lines/words, with vocal gusto, really makes them stick inyour mind.
The opening track "The Game Needed Me" is a weaker one, seeming to fall short of the mark of the quirkiness the band can normally present. Lines seem of time, and the thumping yet slow bassline is disconcerting, as is the strange guitar chords and effects. None the less, there are still ...
Advantages: Stunning apartments, very clean, good price, very central Disadvantages: Nothing!
Lounge, Matt and Phred's Jazz Club, the Frog and Bucket comedy club, and loads of older style bars, great for everyone. Some of the bars around the Northern Quarter are a little pretentious.
The Northern Quarter Apartments are located on Tib Street. The apartments are housed in one of Manchester's oldest buildings (a stunning 150 year old market building). It's on a main road, with a nightclub literally 5 minutes walk along the road, which can be noisy on a weekend, so it probably should't be your first choice if you're after a quiet night. There's a record shop next to the apartments and there's a very handy pizza shop which stays open late, on the corner of the street.
How to get there
The best way to get to Manchester and the apartments in by train, then you don't have the hassle of getting parked and actually finding it, as we ...
Advantages: A joy to listen to - something a bit different Disadvantages: The odd "filler" track - little or no recognition in the UK
solos - the first song I'd ever heard from the band having downloaded it a couple of months prior to buying the album, and a great start to the album it must be said.
And just to assure you that the song names get no less bizarre - "Monkey!!! Knife!!! Fight!!!" is the name of track two. The song continues the spirit of somewhat uplifting rock music - a quick tempo and exciting layerings (if such a word exists?!) of sound.
"Absinthe Party At The Fly Honey Warehouse" builds up slowly with vacant guitar plucking and a drumbeat - gradually building until the lyrics hit in after about a minute - certainly an example of the experimental element of the band. The song seemingly centres around drinking alone, or at least thats what I can determine from the lyrics. Another top tune - one of the best off the album.
The main disappointment ...
