Some of the very best opera singers DECCA have ever had are here, Sutherland, Pavarotti (a lot of Pavarotti), Carreras (rather strained but potent beside Kiri te Kanawa in 1987), Caballe, Freni, Bergonzi all star. Particularly impressive is the duet with Mario del Monaco and Ettore Bastianini from La Forza del Destino which is sounds like a reincarnation of Enrico Caruso and Antonio Scotti but in terrific stereo sound (it is amazing that the recording, the oldest selection on this cd, is from over 50 years ago you simply couldnt tell from the sound. The quality of the stereo is good amongst all the extracts, even the only live performance, Pavarotti and Kiri Te Kanawa in Otello from 1991 with Georg Solti, is free from much background noise. A lot of good singing is brought together here and this proves a invaluable resource for finding out which opera recordings to go for in the future.
Advantages: Some classic solo tracks Disadvantages: A collection which doesn't separate the wheat from the chaff
Born To Love You - will be recognised by Queen fans as appearing on the 1995 Queen album Made In Heaven. On this album, both are quite alot more piano based without Brian May's guitar, with IWBTLY being very poppy and upbeat.
Personally, 3 tracks on this album make me cringe. The lyrics of Mr Bad Guy, Man Made Paradise and My Love Is Dangerous portraying Freddie as a sexual God and they just don't quite seem right to listen to at ease.
The highlights for me on this album are 2 of the ballads - There Must Be More To Life Than This and Love Me Like There's No Tomorrow - just what Freddie does supremely, use his voice to great effect over a slow piano in the background.
Disc 2 - Barcelona is an 8 track operatic masterpiece recorded as a duet with the opera singer Monserrat Caballé.
Everyone must have surely heard the title track ...
