All those men in make-up, all those really bad taste in clothes and the Austin Meastro, surely something half decent had to emerge from the 1980's.
Looking back at it all now though its hard to think of a song I liked that wasnt sung by men in make-up wearing extremley dodgy clothes! There was Depeche Mode, Spandau Ballet, Gary Numan, Adam and the Ants, all of which produced some really good and original music, all with very distinctive sounds of thier own....but to me there will always be a true 1980's super new romantic band...
DURAN DURAN....
Way back in 1981, when we had just got over the 70's and punk was starting to lose its momentum, bands started appearing offering a new, different approach, they nearly all wore the make-up and wore daft clothes but to me Duran Duran were different.
The music was miles better than 'joe dolci - wat da matta u hey!' and other rubbish left over from the 70's.
1981 saw Duran Duran's first real taste of fame.
The ditinctive voice of Simon le bon could be heard on '275 and 285 - national radio 1' long before Radio 1 FM had been dreampt up ! Songs such as Girls on Film and Planet Earth greatly contributed to many a school disco .
1982 was even better for Duran Duran, already a now well established pop group with an ever growing army of teenage girls as thier fan club, nothing could stop them.
Hit after hit emerged, you may well remember the video with Simon le Bon hanging off the front of a yacht, this was all in 1982, the song was Save a Prayer. Also from this year we saw the hits , RIO and 'Hungry like the wolf'.
In 1983 the band were massive but unfortunatley the pace seemed to slow a little, too much all at once I think for these boys!
More hits were made though it seemed that the band suffered quite a few rumours of splitting up etc....all publicity no doubt.
1983 saw the hits, Union of the Snake, New moon on Monday, The Reflex and Is there something I should know. Not a bad year for them at all.....could this have spelt the end??
No, still ever popular Duran Duran forged ahead and produced even more hit music well into the late 80's,Songs such as Wild Boys (1984) , Notorious (1986), All she wants is (1988) and I dont want your love (1988),they even went on to score a massive hit with the theme to a James Bond movie - View to a kill.(1985)
All went quiet until in the early 90's Duran Duran were back, this time not anywhere near as big, but still selling records by the thousand.
However the 80's was most definatley Duran Duran's finest decade, leading the way for other artists and showing the world that its not only women that can wear make-up and have really bad hair.
The album 'GREATEST' includes all thier best stuff from the 80's and a few from the 90's , so if you enjoyed thier music then, or even sang along to it without realising , then this album brings it all flooding back, an essential part of British music culture still there to be enjoyed by everyone (even my wife enjoys it and she was only about 5 or 6 at the time)

This album is a definate must for anyone that wants to retract thier minds back to that sad, but sometimes mad decade!!

course)--all their ground-breaking videos together in one place. More than radio, MTV made mega-stars out of the photogenic group, and few took better advantage of the me...
