Advantages: All the best songs in one place Disadvantages: Not worthwhile for the aged-old fan
channels and maybe it does get the odd bit of 'extra' airtime. (E.g. "Close To Me" being on a BBC Three programme...it's name escapes me, but it may have been the 'Smoking Room'? Answers on a postcard...)
Their 'greatesthits' album, released in 2001 through Fiction Records and only done so on the basis that Smith could choose the tracks himself is 19 tracks that show a chronological tale of the band and their music through the years. (Although two of the tracks are brand new!)
Opening track "Boys Don't Cry" was released in June 1979, eight years before I was born. Yet with it's instantly recognisable guitar riff it's something that the countless bands since then that have idolised and 'taken influence' from the Cure could take the rest of time to improve on. I believe the saying is along the lines of put some monkeys in a room ...
Advantages: Great tracks old and new Disadvantages: None
with the stunning elegance and the beauty of lyric phrasing of Lena Horne, and she is Whitney Houston." Spoken in 1985, he was definitely true!
Generally I tend to think that greatesthits albums are a waste of money because if you have all the artists other CD's you probably have most of the tracks anyway but this album is well worth it. It's the one place where you can get all her old classics, as well as new songs and some funky duets.
The album comes as a double CD but if you get the DVD version you also get music videos of past hits, live performances and interviews. The music videos are great as you really see her in action.
The CD was released in 2000. Like I said it's a double CD and each CD has a really cool title. Disc 1 is called Cool Down and features her more chilled, love songs even though she still belts out some cracking vocals ...
Advantages: Brilliant, wonderful rock songs Disadvantages: ...Erm...not for people who like dance music...misses their newer stuff
So going through a pile of my mums CD I spot Westlife, Madonna, Avril Lavigne, Athelete then Aerosmith's greatesthits...well doesn't take a genius to work out which I'm going to take a listen to does it. The plastic cased cover has a nice that when the case is opend "flat" looks rather attractive, the inlay book is album history and credits (why no lyrics?) and the back of the case has the song list.
This world famous band, who've been together for well over 30 years, are considered one of the staple's of American rock, the band led by the always charismatic Steven Tyler (Mick Jagger lookey likey or what?) have managed a longevity many modern bands would be happy with and more so, they have been performing at a high level for the marjority of it.
So now back onto the album, the opening track "Dream on" was sampled by Eminem in his ...

Recorded at Passion Studios, Connecticut; Wally World, California; The Record Plant, Hollywood, California; The Dugout, Nashville, Tennessee; Cherokee Studios, Los Angeles, California. Michael Bolton possesses numerous attributes inherent to a great recording artist--a grandiose voice able to be at once overwhelming and gentle, the vision to convey powerful emotional details with simple vocal inflections, the ability to set his songs in precise musical colors. But what is probably his most overlooked quality is also his greatest strength: The man is a tunesmith non-pareil. Not only is he a powerful songwriter in his own right (having written for everyone from Barbra Streisand to Kiss), but his knowledge and choice of cover songs borders on the omniscient. And they all become hits--the proof is on GREATEST HITS 1985-1995. It was Bolton's renditions of soul classics that first gained him an audience. Zelma Redding, widow of the legendary Otis Redding, called Bolton's chart-topping take on "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay" her "all-time favorite version," and his interpretation of "Georgia On My Mind" personifies the timeless elegance of modern pop. Yet his own compositions shine just as brightly: "Soul Provider" glides with a smoky, saloon feel, "How Can We Be Lovers" deftly communicates the complexities of relationships, and "Steel Bars" (co-written with Bob Dylan) moves with classic Bryan Adams-ish abandon. GREATEST HITS also shows off Bolton's knack for nurturing hits out of current songwriters, and finding nuggets ripe for renewing. Among the latter is the remake of Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne's "A Love So Beautiful," a sweeping ballad on which Bolton pays homage to Orbison's unique tenor. Among the former are "When I'm Back On My Feet Again," "Time, Love And Tenderness" and "The River"--all by Diane Warren, all modern-day epics of the heart that place the fleeting, indescribable moments of love (and love lost) into exquisitely poetic pop statements.
Album Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (10/6/95, pp.60-62) - "...The music huffs and puffs even when it doesn't have to, and Bolton's nuance-impaired groaning remains an acquired taste..." - Rating: D
