Pop punk may now be a genre of over-heated political naff-ness to be honest, but back in the 80's it was a different story. One of the members of the pop punk movement of the 80's (and early 90's) was Billy Idol. In 2001 this album was put together before his return.
The disk contains most of his classics such as "Sweet Sixteen", "White wedding" and "Rebel yell".
Now an indivual break down song by song.
1. Dancing With Myself 2. Mony Mony 3. Hot In The City 4. White Wedding (Part 1) 5. Rebel Yell 6. Eyes Without A Face 7. Flesh For Fantasy 8. Catch My Fall 9. To Be A Lover 10. Don't Need A Gun (Single Edit) 11. Sweet Sixteen 12. Cradle Of Love 13. L.A. Woman (Single Edit) 14. Shock To The System 15. Rebel Yell (Live And Acoustic) 16. Don't You (Forget About Me)
Dancing with myself, An easy going song to help you get into the feel of Billy Idol. Apparently written about masturbation (pretty start to a greatest hits huh?) Soft punk at it's near best. 9/10
Mony mony, This is slightly more "hooky"
and heavier punk than the previous song. Going from slowly solo singing, to a full out vocal arguement with the backing chior. Punk gold, but unfortunately overlooked today due to the "punk" fans siding with bands like "Greenday" and "Blink -182". 10/10
Hot in the city, Starting with the backing choir/singing, and is the first "ballady" song on the album. Not to my personal taste but it's still listenable. It helps to show the divercity of Billy early on in the album. 6/10
White wedding, One of Billy's most famous tracks, and from the moment he hits the first vocal chord in a slightly gruff manner to the point the song ends you never feel he's done anything bad in the song. A peach of a punk dance pop merge, with a really catchy lyrical hook and simple catchy musical accompanyment. 10/10
Rebel yell, His most punky track and from the opening notes you can just feel this is something special. We hear a more rough style of vocal from Billy which i wish he'd of used a little bit more. A top track which has a somewhat legendary status attached to it through Idol's fans. 10/10
Eye's without a face, A softer feel to the music, with a wonderful title. A gorgeous lyrical composition, to one of the better soft songs on the album. This is how soft "punk" ballads are done. You can feel his love for his work but yet also hear him being restrained enough to concentrate on the song. 8/10
Flesh for fantasy, Another wonderful title so a song, with a slightly edgeier feel than the previous song. Again it's a softer sounding song on the whole, with a slightly rockier sound to the chorus. 8/10
Catch my fall, A dancey feeling start, before the baratone vocals kick in one of the first songs with a distinguishable "story" in the lyrics. Although not one of the best songs on the album it holds up well as a song on it's own. 8/10
To be a lover, A techno dance intro, with a second looper placed over the top and the Idol's vocals being placed as a third layer, whilst in the chorus a female voice is placed as a fourth layer. The song isn't one of Idol's best lyrically, but one of the most accomplished overall from a musical point of view. 8/10
Don't need a gun, A soft but yet edgy sounding punk song. Billy's back to his best with a song that fits into the upper echeleon of punk music. This is one of the best songs on the album's even if you're not a big Idol fan you will love this song. With anti-violence undertones, it has nothing to dislike. 10/10
Sweet sixteen, If the previousl song was one of the best on the disk, this is the best on the disk. Arguably Idol's most famous song, and unarguable a punk classic. A soft sound to the song that typifies Billy's vocals and lyrics. Simple but yet rigidly perfectionate, and worth a listen by anyones standards. 10/10
Cradle of love, A drum based start with an untypical sounding Idol song with him sounding "un-Idol-like". Not one of my favourites, actually probably my least favourite on the album. Definately not worth it's position on his best of. 4/10
L.A. Woman, A more toe-tapping sound to the previous songs some what warble-like sound. Sounds oddly like Elvis, but with a more rocky sound. Yet again not one of the albums' best (it has the poor parts of Elvis with the poor parts of Idol). 6/10
Shock to the system, Back to the punky rough sounds of some of the other better tracks. The album seemed to lack these sorts of songs and had a few too many fillers on it. The chorus is just something exceptional. Another contender for best song on the album 10/10
Rebel yell (live and acoustic), A softer tone to it, which i think in a way takes away the punk feel to it. The lyrics still stand the test as does Billy's unrivalled lvocal's, though the acoustic takes away a lot of the original's quality. 8/10
Don't you (forget about me), This reminds me of the '80's rock guitar bands when it starts and then it goes to a perfect vocal which sits on his musical backing wonderfully. This is taken off his newest album, and seems to show the way he's evolved, and if he carry's on with this line I for one wouldn't be saddened, as it's a great direction, far better than the ballady stuff. 9/10
Overall a good album that was let down by some songs that weren't anywhere near Billy's best. A simple insight to Billy's career is conatied in the inlay booklet. Not much left to say, except this album does contain a lot of Billy's best songs, it's just also got a handful of song completely void of Billy's usual style and sound.
