These songs enrapture the soul and move one greatly with the soulful singing and powerful instrumentation. 'Robin- The Hooded Man' is also on this CD, which was an immense success and came from the album 'Legend' which won a BAFTA, the first Irish band to ever do so. Thus, you can see the quality and originality of their works perfectly in this CD. The band is primarily folk, originating from Ireland and at first focusing on traditional folk music, however, later on in their career, the band moved towards pop music whilst still retaining the hugely strong Celtic influence. This CD gives a sample of all of their work and is perfect for all those wanting an varied, stirring CD. Enya, the lead singer of the band, is characterized by her usual spell-binding voice and the fact that she has the whole band, meaning extra vocalization and instrumentation, supporting her, creating an utterly evocative series of tunes. One such tune (Something to Believe In) is led by Bono, who delivers an extraordinarily strong vocal performance and produces one of the most moving songs on the CD. Some of the songs do not match the aforementioned tunes in terms of memorability, but all track, in their won way, have been a great success in the past and have deserved it, mainly because their style is so unique. Many of the songs are in Irish Gaelic and they display the other more traditional side of Clannad and are certainly relaxing and emotive. I would most certainly recommend this album to all those wanting to listen to a wide selection of Clannad songs and perhaps those who have never listened to Clannad before. A wholly impressive mix of traditional and modern tunes which will appeal to nearly all who appreciate folk or Irish music.

...music. On this album THE GREATEST HITS, we listen to some of Clannad's best-loved songs, including the "Theme from Harry's Game." This song, was written for a popular BBC television program, Harry's Game which is probably Clannad's most moving, haunting composition, although some may say there are alot of choir-like vocals on this album.

Perhaps it's that the newer Greatest Hits volume concentrates on their more popular successes, while the former collection attempted to present an idea of Clannad's diversity. In any case, there's more than enough quality material here to make Greatest Hits appealing even for those who already own Rogha, although that collection's greater variety still gives it a very slight ...

Advantages: At best, inspirational, haunting and atmospheric Disadvantages: At worst, just pleasant background music
, on the other hand, could equally be seen as a strength. It really is capable of taking the imagination to all sorts of new places. As an introduction to Clannad, it's probably not ideal - better to buy their GreatestHits collection "Past Present". For someone really into the band, or perhaps looking to get rather spooked out, maybe give this a try!
I first listened to this album at a friend's house, and it won me over, though not without a few reservations. After that, I easily picked up my copy on an Internet auction site - I'm sure you know where to go! I've never regretted it, even if only for the four wonders I've mentioned above.
So:
Chilled? Not exactly; it's too intense for that.
Lyrically sublime? Well, no, not always.
Mysterious, folkish and magical? Oh yes, at its best, it definitely fits that description! ...

Album Notes
Clannad includes: Maire Brennan (vocals). Additional personnel includes: Bono, Bruce Hornsby. Clannad started out like many Irish traditional folk bands. Some of their early material for Gael-Linn Records could have been mistaken for The Chieftains or other traditionalists. However, their signing to RCA Records, and their 1982 hit "Theme From Harry's Game," catapulted them to the top of the UK pop charts. Most importantly, Clannad was one of the first Irish bands to delve into ambient music. On GREATEST HITS, we hear some of Clannad's best-loved songs, including the previously mentioned "Theme from Harry's Game." This song, written for a popular BBC television program, is probably Clannad's most moving, haunting composition. The choir-like vocals and the huge reverb transport the listener into verdant harmonic pastures. Other songs, such as "Something to Believe In," are as pop as pop gets, but their arrangement of the traditional tune "The Fairy Queen" harks back to Clannad's original folk roots.
