I am fond of a fair portion of Guns 'n' Roses tunes, but I'm not sure if I qualify as a fully paid-up fan. For this reason, its stands to reason that this is the ideal CD for me or anyone else who considers themself part of the same demographic.
There's no denying that the band or its various line-ups have released some poor material in the past also, but all of the well known classics are here. As a criticism, I would say that any avid fan may be disappointed at just 14 songs from a band with such a history and back catalogue. That said, I find the tracks to my liking and all of the golden ones are here. Personally, I wouldn't have chosen the last few tracks, maybe replaced on or two of the them. But the first three quarters of the album is hit after hit.
The tracks are as follows;
1. Welcome To The Jungle 2. Sweet Child 'O' Mine 3. Patience 4. Paradise City 5. Knocking On Heaven's Door 6. Civil War 7. You Could Be Mine 8. Don't Cry 9. November Rain 10. Live And Let Die 11. Yesterdays 12. Aint It Fun 13. Since I Don't Have You 14. Sympathy For The Devil
I wouldn't bother trying to rate the tracks individually as most are well-known to all. 'Knocking On Heaven's Door' a rousing Dillon cover especially far-reaching. The likes of 'November Rain,' 'Sweet Child 'O' Mine' and 'Paradise City' adorn many-a karaoke machine around the world and I wouldn't insult by giving a score. There are plenty of poignant, heartfelt tracks to match the thunderbolts. 'Civil War' and 'Patience' are two of the more ambient tracks and are good examples of how heavy music can also be intelligent and relaxing.
After a quick check it seems that this album is available from the likes of Play & Amazon at around the £8.99 mark but can be found for under a fiver on the likes of ebay. Less than a fiver, that's not even paper money... bargain!
The album is nicely presented á la roses and mounted guns and comes in a half CD-case, half sleeve design. No complaints here over the presentation. The CD runs to over seventy minutes comfortably and personally, that's enough for me or anyone else who is little more than an armchair supporter. This collection could have been twice as long, which may appease the hardcore of the band's fans. However, this would have resulted in the inclusion of some weaker tracks and only served to dilute the overall quality of the album.
Personally, I think the right amount of tracks have been included and the album will please any casual observer. Most fans of GNR will also be swooning over it as it is a pleasing testament to the works of this group and all that they have achieved.
If you want this album for one track in particular, then it will probably be on here. It would be hard to be disappointed with an album as good as this... an if you are, quite frankly, I think you're ungrateful.
It's a fine example of its genre and an impressive collection of Hits. I recommend you buy it, go on, I've checked in your wallet, I know you can afford it.
