the Ronettes. In the 1990s, Vernie and Easther Bennett led Eternal as the new girl pop queens. An uncanny coincidence and one worth bearing in mind when looking at the classic lineage of Eternal's fully-formed work. Their career was quite short, but they burned brightly all the way, leaving no room for mistakes or fillers. This greatest hits, then, is the very best of the best. They swing, they smooch and they seduce through a body of work that is made for the chart parade. Soulful solidarity and sisterhood is their gospel and no-nonsense pop grooves their playground. The feel-good factor runs high in Eternal and these stone-cold classics are made to last for eternity. It's lightweight commercial music with that added special dimension that makes these songs last the distance. --Ben Clancy

Eternal's Greatest Hits is a CD that is exactly what the title says that it is- it is a collection of Eternal's greatest, and best, songs.
There are seventeen songs on it, including Stay, Save Our Love, Power of a Woman and I Wanna Be The Only One. These songs, along with the others on the album are very catchy, and display the amazing singing talents of Kelle, Esther and Vernie. The songs are 'dancy,' and make you feel on top of the world when ...

Advantages: A nice balance of hits from one of the best bands in the eighties Disadvantages: One or two bad tracks
First Death In Vegas, then Republica...and now The Bangles!
This is actually one of my sisters albums, but I decided I'd nick it. I think the Bangles are one of the finest 'girl bands' from the eighties. Mind you, in comparison to the likes of Bananarama, I can say that quite easily!
Fronted by Suzanna Hoffs as lead singer for the most part with Annette Zilinskas (later Michael Steele), Vicki and Debbi Peterson adding their voices for choice songs, the band were one of the most successful bands of the eighties, but will be forever remembered for their hit track "Eternal Flame" from 1988. That's a shame, as a lot of their other tracks are so much better.
On the GreatestHits album, they have made a good balance of all of their best including the likes of Walk Like An Egyptian, In Your Room, Hazy Shade of Winter, Manic Monday ...
Advantages: Diverse sampler for some of Vangelis' extensive discography. Disadvantages: Lacks context, and ignores much classic material.
a little bit from the others, or at least I would have thought so. To add to this insanity, 'Odyssey' isn't even the most recent of these carbon copies, although it remains the last to be officially endorsed. It seems that Universal's goal is merely to fill an accessible 'greatesthits' spot on HMV shelves for eternity, while drawing in the hardcore fans by adding one or two rare and previously unreleased tracks completely out of context.
Context is indeed the major factor lacking here, though this is something that plagues all compilations for all bands. As partially ambient electronic works, Vangelis' individual tracks appear almost always to be crafted with the rest of the album's companion pieces in mind. To take examples from this collection, 'Pulstar' and 'Alpha' may have been the strongest picks from 1976's 'Albedo 0.39' LP, but ...
Advantages: Not one really bad song Disadvantages: None really
's quite similar to Janet Jacksons 'Runaway'. 7.5/10, reached no.4.
15. All that matters - This is dying to be a ballad but is just a little too fast. Disposable pop at it's best. 6/10, reached no.11.
16. This is the final track and another new one and sounds very reminisent of the Eternal years. Just not quite as memorable. 6/10.
So being a greatesthits package does this mean that we wont hear anything else from Lou again? Not really as this is just a sort of leaving package for EMI records (she was dropped by them earlier on this year shockingly). Louise will no doubt have another record contract under her sleeve and will keep on producing those catchy little numbers well into her 20's, after all she is only 25! And if her next greatesthits package is packed with as much quality as this one then i will wait for it with baited breath ...
