This album serves as a decent intro into the world of Neil Young but considering how there is little from later albums like Sleeps With Angels, Broken Arrow, This Notes For You or Life I would recommend the double disc of Decade which features more songs and spans his time with Buffalo Springfield and CSN & Y right up to 1976.
But the criticism of this album only extends the track selection - you cannot argue with the music here - the most famous songs are included: the stunning Like A Hurricane, the haunting and pretty Heart Of Gold (for an excellent cover of this buy Tori Amos - Strange Little Girls), the tragic Needle and the Damage Done. This also contains the song that inspired Kurt Cobains suicide note pay off - "its better to burn out than to fade away", Hey Hey My My (Into the Black).
It is good that they have included the earlier folky, C&W style songs but considering that Young is one of the most versatile and prolific songwriters of all time it would be a more rounded appraisal of his work if they had taken songs from the rockier albums like Zuma and Rust Never Sleeps or electronica like Trans or blues like This Notes For You. This collection was released last year yet there is nothing from Greendale, Mirrorball (with Pearl Jam) or Ragged Glory.
We will have to wait to see if Neil ever completes the legendary Archives project to have the chance to hear a more rounded representation of this brilliant man.
I would also recommend here an excellent biography of Neil called Shakey - this isn't just for anyone who loves Neil - its for anyone with an interest in heartfelt music made with integrity and a disregard for demographics and money and the mechanics of how the music is made.
Advantages: Fine for a casual Neil Young listener Disadvantages: Only tells part of the story
Well for anyone wanting an easy (if possible) introduction into NeilYoung this is not really the place to start. For that i'd head straight for the recently released GreatestHits or older collection Decade (great early career overview) or better still any number of 'classic' Neil albums such as Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, After The Gold Rush, Tonight's The Night, Rust Never Sleeps etc.
This collects in a rather random way a couple of tracks from most of Neil's albums which were a result of his failed association with Geffen Records in the 80's. Trans is represented by Sample And Hold and Transformer Man where Neil experimented with the use of vocoders to try and come up with a kind of hybrid Kraftwerk sound with mixed results. Old Ways - a much more languid country album has a couple of good tracks showcased here, Once An Angel ...

Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, guitar, harmonica); J.J. Cale, Nicolette Larson (vocals); Frank Sampedro, Nils Lofgren (guitar); Billy Talbot (bass guitar); James Taylor , Linda Ronstadt (background vocals); Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Stray Gators. Producers: Neil Young; David Briggs; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Henry Lewy. Recording information: 1969 - 1992. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. How does one represent the career of one of the most distinctive, powerful singer/songwriters of the 20th century in the space of a single CD By keeping it simple and sticking to the milestones. That's exactly what GREATEST HITS accomplishes, by presenting 16 of Neil Young's most beloved compositions. The gritty, fuzz-guitar fury of Young's work with Crazy Horse ("Cinnamon Girl," "Hey Hey, My My [Into the Black]") brushes up against the acoustic-based, country-tinged "Old Man" and "Only Love Can Break Your Heart," as well as haunting, soul-baring ballads such as "The Needle and the Damage Done." Few would deny that the 1970s were Young's richest decade, and this collection strongly focuses on those years, skipping most of Young's genre-hopping '80s albums and grandfather-of-grunge '90s recordings, but the gems from those years would make a rewarding sequel to this concise, sterling anthology.
