Greatest Hits - Wilson Pickett

Advantages: still soulful
Disadvantages: no hits - buy a compilation

...This cd was originally produced in 1969, maybe after Soul's heyday, but still a whole lot better than the majority of songs passed off as soulful today. Wilson "in the midnight hour" Pickett has an excellant voice conveying true emotion and really let's you know when he's hurting or yearning. The songs themselves are a mixed bag:- Hey Jude, and Born to be wild, the 2 covers on the cd suffer in that the style of the original is so strong that they don't quite feel right. The uptempo songs such as Save me, toe hold, and man and a half are yhe stanout tracks where the braggardo Mr Pickett drives these songs forward. Slower songs such as back in your arms lack the drive to make them vital Stylishly this is still pure horn driven soul, and as the majority of the songs are uptemp originals you can't help but move your feet... Advantages: Classic album shocasing the best of 2pac
Disadvantages: A few weak tracks, which should not have been included

...Greatest hits albums are usually not considered as classics nor generally do they define the pinnacle of an artist's career. However when it comes to 2pac's greatest hits there is an exception. Why is there an exception, well it can be put down to 2 major reasons. Firstly he was in the mid 90's the most famous rapper. Although his fame did not reach the heights as the likes of Eminem or Jay-Z today, he was still nevertheless reasonably famous and an exceptionally talented rapper. Secondly and perhaps most importantly though was the tragic fact that he had died just shortly before the release of this album. 2pac had been shot dead in a murder case that is still unresolved till this day and has been the subject of many conspiracy theories. Sure, Knockin' On Heaven's Door was good, Live And Let Die was pretty damn good too, but on a Greatest Hits, covers should be more scarce (especially when they are Since I Don't Have You and Sympathy For The Devil - Tolerable, yes, greatest hits?
