The history of the Gregorian Chant is an old one. It dates back to at least to the time of Pope Gregory I or Gregory the Great as he was otherwise known. Gregory abandoned his life as an up -and-coming young Roman patrician, of whom great things were expected. But he became a monk, instead. After being ordained by the pope, he eventually became pope himself. He served as pope between 590 to 604.
Pope Gregory worked hard to formalise and bring togther the varied types of church singing as part of the Mass. And the result of his work was the Gregorian Chant.
The Gregorian Chant is far from a dead form of choral music. Far from it. There is a Gregorian Association and the English branch has no less a luminary than the Archbishop of Canterbury as its president. The musical director is Peter Wilton, an expert in the Gregorian Chant.
The Gregorian Chant is still used in churches and monasteries throughout the world as part of a tradition of continuing Christian worship. As in the music on the two CDs in this set, the singing is performed by the Monastic Choir of the Abbey of Saint Pierre de Solesmes, the words are in Latin.
Even if like me, you cannot understand the words, all one needs to do is to listen to the singing of the dedicated monks on this CD. It is beautiful, serene and it brings peace and tranquility to the anxious soul in these, our exceptionally troubled times.
There are 41 different example of Georgians Chants on the two CDs in this collection. All are hauntingly beautiful and easy not only on the ear but also on the soul, too.

Advantages: Calming and soothing music. Disadvantages: The tracks all generally resemble one another.
This CD has been immensely popular as of late and even reached high into the music charts- not usual for Gregorianchanting I am sure!
It's popularity may be due to the fact that it is an immensely relaxing album- the soothing singing of the monks is guaranteed to send one to sleep or just to put one into a state of relaxation.
Included in the CD are recordings of the bells of HeiligenKreuz also, but the majority of the album comprises of Gregorianchanting. It may be said that there is not a huge diversity of songs or a great difference between each track.
The CD lasts approximately one hour, and it is a great CD to listen to if you want to enjoy a calming hour without wanting a collection of greatly different tracks such as one would get with a modern artist or modern style of music.
Much of the CD is requiem ...
I have to admit that I've liked Gregorianchant music ever since Ben in Butterflies (70's television programme) used to listen to it (yes, I really am that old!). It's great that Chant Music For Paradise has been released and has done so well in the charts. The cover is a clear indication of how peaceful it is. Just lay down or play it in the background and feel the chill sweep over you. Another bonus is that it's not something that you can sing along to, so no chance of anyone spoiling it! Don't be put off if you've never heard of this type of music or think it is for old fogies, it isn't! Be brave, try something new and chillax...zzz ...
Advantages: Easy on the ear and suitable for all! Disadvantages: none
Beautiful music and chanting of the daily life and works of the monks ! It even has the bells tolling in the back and even as one track all in itself . Some may not like this however it gives us an insight to their world and how they live and that we too must stop at times each day to pray to rest to eat and so on.
Its fabulous cannot fault it, easy on the ears and just uplifting. Most of the music is Gregorianchant and its sung in latin which is something so unique and lovely. It has also been a huge success and you will understand when you listen to it, also great for playing while working around the house , due to it being so soothing and relaxing.
I would most definitely recommend it ...
