Advantages: An insight into the great mind that was - Frank Zappa Disadvantages: May be a little to wild for some people.
''
Some nice solo work on the guitar from Zappa in the track. Funny narrative to it also.
Track Seven - Apostrophe'
'
You'd expect the title track of the album to be good. This was. Great tempo for a great sound, also allowing Zappa's real creativity to shine through. 5mins 50secs of great flat-out 70's rock!
Track Eight - Uncle Remus
Not Zippity-doo-dah, but really rather good and my favorite track on the album! A+ for this one, and I don't know why I like it so much. Amazing backing vocals give it a kinda soul-feel. But seriously listen to it; it ends with another great solo from Zappa.
Track Nine - Stink-Foot
You must have heard of this track already. This is Zappa ...
Advantages: Easy to read and very informative Disadvantages: May be difficult to track down
ISBN 0-330-31625-7. This is an important number. It's the ISBN of "The Real FrankZappa Book" published by Picador. I bought this, read it, loved it, lent it, never got it back, forgot about it , then saw it in Fopps in Glasgow for a paltry £3.50, bought it, read it again, and now I'll tell you about it.
FrankZappa died of cancer about 1992/3 and was a great loss to the art world. He hd been making music since the early sixties , with the Mothers of Invention, and as a solo artist, and also became a respected classical composer. His work "The Yellow Shark" stayed on the classical charts for over twelve months following its release.
THe book is a series of recollections about Zappa's early life and how he became who he is and the aquaintances he made along the way.
The most fascinating part of this book, and the one that gives ...
Advantages: a brilliant 1974 concert with a top notch Zappa band Disadvantages: not quite the whole gig and the instrumentals may be a little off putting to newcomers
YCDTOSA volume 2 is culled from two concerts In Helsinki in 1974, expertly mixed together and presented as one complete set.
The band included keyboard wizard George Duke, sax player and vocalist extraordinaire Napoleon Murphy Brock, Chester Thompson on drums (later to be in Genesis) Tom Fowler on bass and Ruth Underwood on all manner of percussion. This ensemble, small by Zappa's standards, is arguably the best he'd ever work with.
The show opens with the band vamping on "Tush Tush Tush" as George and Nappy discuss backstage goings on.
As soon as Zappa appears he swiftly introduces the band and we're off into "Stinkfoot", one of FZ's preferred opening numbers. A squalling guitar solo at the end and it's straight into "Inca Roads".
Now listeners familiar with the studio version of "Inca Roads" on 1975's One Size Fits All will ...
Personnel: Frank Zappa (guitar); Bobby Martin (vocals, saxophone, keyboards); Tommy Mars (vocals, keyboards); Ike Willis, Ray White, Steve Vai, Warren Cucurrullo (guitar); Denny Walley (slide guitar); Alan Zavod, Peter Wolf (keyboards); Arthur Barrow, Scott Thunes (bass); Vinnie Colaiuta, Chad Wackerman (drums); Ed Mann (percussion).
Engineers: Mark Pinskie, Klaus Wiedemann. Recorded live between 1979 and 1984. The SPARS code is split almost evenly between ADD and DDD recordings. This is the instrumental sequel to SHUT UP 'N PLAY YOUR GUITAR, featuring 30 previously unreleased tracks with the spotlight on Frank Zappa as guitar soloist. Frank Zappa's 1988 release GUITAR is the follow-up to his 1986 guitar solo smorgasbord, SHUT UP N' PLAY YER GUITAR. Like it's predecessor, GUITAR is a double-disc set comprised of in-concert Zappa guitar solos (some were taken from actual songs, others are between-song improvisation). All of the solos have been seamlessly edited together, so the entire set plays like one long piece. The solos were taken from tours ranging from 1979 through 1984, a much broader selection than SHUT UP N' PLAY YER GUITAR, which only contained material from 1979-1980. "In-A-Gadda-Stravinsky" is a combination of the bass line from Iron Butterfly's late '60s l classic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," and Zappa's Stravinsky-like guitar melodies. Another composer (George Gershwin) gets the Zappa guitar treatment via "It Ain't Necessarily the Saint James Infirmary," which includes snippets of the Gershwin classic "It Ain't Necessarily So." Also included is "For Duane," which is a bluesy solo taken from Zappa's cover of the Allman Brothers' "Whipping Post" (Zappa's full rendition of the track can be found on 1983'S THEM OR US). Other great solos include "Watermelon In Easter Hay" and "Sexual Harassment In the Workplace," among many others.
