Advantages: Days of Pearly Spencer Disadvantages: The rest
...overshadows the rest of his work. His lyrics are often clichéd ("I hope some day you'll be mine"), with lots of gypsies, mists and dewy morns (rhymed with dawns of course), or cringe-making sub-sixth form poetry ("when she loves, it feels so good, like I'm flying in the sky"). Others depend on archaic inversions ("I had not been in London town many more weeks than three") to make them rhyme.
And at times they simply descend into laughable bathos: "Yes, I'm a free born man/ And I've a road to travel / And I'll walk it while I can / Be it smooth or be it gravel."
The sentiments in his protest songs are undoubtedly sincere, but don't go far beyond platitudes. On Hiroshima, he doesn't have much to offer besides 'this wouldn't happen if we were all nice to each other and tried to get along'. His statutory swipe at capitalism, Mister Satisfied, trots...

Advantages: Original, some good tunes Disadvantages: Songs are very variable in quality
...Well, I bought Magic and Medicine on a bit of a whim really. And I don't regret it, don't get me wrong. But, for some strange reason I just can't decide if I really like The Coral, or am I just putting up with them because I went to the effort of buying their album ?
You must know what I mean here. When you buy an album and actually part with hard-earned money for it, you kind of feel a little obliged to like it. And mostly, I do like the albums that I buy (even if it is only through repeated playing that eventually breeds familiarity, and consequently fondness).
So, back to The Coral. Some of their songs are joyfully uplifting. With very catchy rhythms and chord progressions, several of the songs are rea toe-tappers (I particularly like Bill McCai). There is a slightly Country/Western feel to some tracks (Talkin' Gypsy Market Blues...
