Talvin Singh is known as the main spokesperson for “Asian cool”, he is a classically trained tabla player who has worked with artists such as Björk and Massive attack and won the Mercury music prize and critical aclaim for his debut album Ok.
This album starts with the mood-setting One, and then moves on to Mustard Fields, which is rightly declared beforehand as anthemic. The Beat Goes On and Dubla are probably the danciest tracks on the album. The Beat Goes On would fit in a Dj’s house set (well it does in mine anyway) and Dubla with its deep bass-lines and squelchy synth intensity is enough to make anyone dance, or at least sway a bit. My personal favourite is the slow, reflective final track Silver Flowers.
Ha is a lot more accessible than Ok, for one thing most of the tracks are vocal, but there is a much dancier, and fun (favourite line “the lyrics have run out, me no have no more… hardcore”) feel to the album as a whole. This album should do really well, the tracks it contains are superb, original and very well performed and produced. This is the kind of album that should be number one in the charts rather than the reformed pop produced by Hear’say and the like.
BEST TUNE: Silver Flowers WORST TUNE: All v. good, but one I like the least is probably Uphold PRODUCTION: Excellent IF LIKE THIS TRY:Massive Attack, Kruder and Dorfmeister compilations
