Radiohead are arguably the most original band in the history of music. Their last 5 albums have been innovative, overwhelming and texturess to the point where your ears fill up with harmony and astral. Hail to the Thief (HttT) is nothing short of this. Compared to their last albums, HttT has more songs, but a lot less electronic influence. The songs seem to have more room to breath and have a lot more air (or silence) flowing through them, making the album perfectly capable of having more songs. Here's three of my favourite songs, analysed and explained by me (SUBJECTIVE):
'"2+2=5'"
As the title suggests, the song is to do with in-equality, but specifically political in-equality. The repeating line “you've not been, paying attention”, initially gave me the idea that Thom Yorke was angry at us for not being aware of the reality of 9/11. However, the song my be directed at the establishment itself for not being aware of the social change occurring within the people. Lines like “Yeah I feel it, I needed attention”, reveal this. Overall the song is an upbeat, rocky anthem piece, which will defiantly get you going at a gig!
'"A Punch up at a Wedding'"
I loved the La Reservoir acoustic version of this song. It's so sensual and light, which is the opposite of the literal meaning of the song. I absolutely adore the animosity throughout the song, because its in such a classy state. Lines like “a bully in a china shop” evoke this amazingly. Also the way Thom's voice soars at that point just brings joy to me. I can't quite put my finger on it. The song also feels like its caked in soul and funk, even though it isn't typically funk and soul. You get that familiar 'wow f*** me this is amazing, I'm amazing' feeling. :D
'"The Gloaming'"
This song sounds and gives me a proper Dubstep vibe. I think its probably the bass line and the poetic occurrences of electronic synths. For me, this song seems to be the oddball in the album. It feels a lot more savvy, and a lot.......thicker then the other songs. What I mean by thicker is the opposite of what I said earlier about it being airy (filled with silence). I'm not saying that there is more noise in the song, so to speak, it just feels like a song that fits into In Rainbows, more then HttT. Still boom though.
Don't take my word for anything. Listen to the album!!
5/5

Advantages: You'll want to listen again and again, no weak links Disadvantages: Will not really attract new fans any better than any of the other stuff Radiohead have produced
Advantages: Everything Radiohead have done so far mixed in a bowl with herbs and mushrooms. Disadvantages: After this there is nothing else worth listening to, except more Radiohead.
