You Can't Stop the Beat is a really toe tapping tune that I could listen to over and over! This is definitely another favourite of mine!

This is a fabulous soundtrack, bursting with 19 fun songs that you just want to dance along to, it really is difficult to stop your feet from tapping along from beginning to end! Most of the songs have a story to tell in the same way as most musical soundtracks, they are fun and will have you singing along before you know it! If you have seen this film - the remake of the 1987 version you will love this CD. The CD starts off as the film does with Good Morning Baltimore, and you will be singing along to it before the song is finished. Performed by Nikki Blonsky the singing is first class. Track 2 speeds things up a little with The Nicest Kids in Town - James Marsden, I am a dancer and I just adore dancing along to this track when no-one else is around! There are some slower tracks on the CD too, and these do not disappoint. Track 3 'It takes two' by Zac Efron (High School Musical) is well sung although I definitely prefer the faster tracks. Track 4 is one of the more narrative songs on the soundtrack and is performed by Michelle Pfeiffer, it's a good song that makes me smile! I Can Hear the Bells, is another slow track performed by Nikki Blonsky, well performed and enjoyable to listen to. Ladies Choice speeds things up again, while The New Girl in Town has a really 60's pop group feel to it. Welcome to the Sixties introduces John Travolta (with Nikki Blonsky) for the first time on the CD, singing as a women - he performs really well, although I doubt he would pass for a woman! Run and Tell That - Elijah Kelley, is a nice song, but not the most outstanding track on the CD, his singing however is excellent! Big, Blonde and Beautiful appears twice on the CD, firstly performed by Queen Latifah, then by John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer (Reprise) both are great, however Queen Latifah's voice definitely outshines everyone else on the whole soundtrack!! (You're) Timeless to Me, performed by John Travolta and Christopher Walken is a fun and light song that makes you want to dance again, or laugh! I Know Where I've Been is a slow song performed by Queen Laifah, it's the kind of song you would expect to hear at the end of a night out, I couldn't think of a better song. Track 14 Without Love is performed by Zac Efron, Nikki Blonsky, Elijah Kelley and Amanda Bynes a bit slushy (but not slow) and corny in the style of the film. (It's) Hairspray performed by James Marsden transports you to a sixties show you can imagine the singers particularly 'Corny Colins' with his slicked hair and suit and tie holding on to his microphone!! You Can't Stop the Beat is a really toe tapping tune that I could listen to over and over! This is definitely another favourite of mine! Track 17 Come so Far (Got So Far To Go) is another cheesy track but great all the same. Cooties seems a little out of place to me, sounding a little more modern than the rest - the film is set in the 60's so I don't think this fits in on the soundtrack unfortunately. Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now features Ricki Lake, who starred as Tracy in the original 1987 film, this is a good finale to the soundtrack.
Advantages: one that can change your mood Disadvantages: limited target audience
...a cast! what a soundtrack! Hairspray is very lucky that it got remade otherwise so many people would have missed out on such a wonderful soundtrack. A lot should be said about the great casting efforts which made it possible. Most people rushed out to see such a great hollywood cast in what seemed an odd musical for them. I mean, Travolta as a lady? But what a surprise! Each and everyone of them was able to hold a note succesfully and pull together ... ...i play this on my ipod all the time and i end up bopping along and often looking a little odd on the bus but it just lightens my mood immediately! I must say that it does have a limited target audience and i wouldnt suggest that metallica fans rush out and buy it. For those that like musicals this is a cut above the rest. ...

Album Notes
Based on the Broadway musical (which was based on the 1988 film by John Waters), the 2007 film adaptation of HAIRSPRAY finds the story coming full circle back to the silver screen. Driven by the star power of Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, and John Travolta (who steals the show with his dressed-in-drag performance as the protagonist's mother), the film features all the upbeat, foot-stomping songs that made the Broadway production such a hit, including "Good Morning Baltimore," "(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs," and "Big, Blonde, and Beautiful." Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the authors of the original show, wrote three new songs for the film: "New Girl in Town," "Come So Far," and the single-worthy "Ladies' Choice," and these tunes blend (in quality and in character) with the originals. Likewise, songs from the original Broadway production that do not appear in the film, including "Cooties" and "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now" appear here in new versions. Fans may quibble over the relative merits of the stage version verses the screen, but both should enjoy these energetic performances of HAIRSPRAY's familiar songs.
