I wanted to like this album...the singles, after all, are truly wonderful. Sunset (Bird Of Prey), with its spooky vocal sample of The Dorrs' late singer Jim Morrison, is a collage of quite awesome beats and bleeps. The new single, Demons, features Macy Gray and if anything is even more magnificent.
Unfortunately, precious little else on Halfway.. comes close to these two tracks. The remaining 60 minutes are an onslaught of disappointingly crude samples, repetetive rhythms and absolutely no sense of melody or invention whatsoever.
Norman Cook's last Fatboy album, 1998's You've Come A Long Way Baby, had a couple of weak links, but the worst tendencies of that record have sadly now become the template of this new one.
This genre of music can be euphoric, exhilarating....blissful, even. Halfway Between The Gutter & The Stars just gave me a headache. I couldn't wait for it to be finally over.
Buy the singles instead.

Point taken, seteo, but as a fan of the previous album, I was bitterly disappointed with Halfway's uninspiring efforts. Norman Cook can do so much better, we know that. When he's good, he's capable of making brilliant music. Thanks for the feedback, and you may well enjoy the record.

Yeah to an extent I agree, but it's all dependant on what style you're looking for - myself, and I'm sure many others, do enjoy the genious behind the way he manages to sample to such wonderful effect.

Nice opinion, well written - I was thinking of buying this album but maybe I'll think twice now! Cheers.
