Hi:
"A hard day's night" was the third album the beatles would released, on july 1964. With this album, the beatles would open the United States doors to their music. In fact, the single from this album would reach the number one at the States charts (of course, same as in England). The album would sell more than a million and a half copies in just two weeks in the UK, the fastest selling album in the British history. For the first time for the beatles, this would be a stereo album (it wasn't very comon stereo albums by that time, 40 years ago).
One of the amizing things is that every song in the whole album was a Lennon-McCartney song .Of course, as always, it usually was lennon's OR McCartney's, but the thing is that there were not any song composed by someone who wasn't a beatle. The first album like this for them, and also, the first album from the 60's released with songs composed only by the members of the band (the last band that did this was "Buddy Holly and the Crickets", back in the 50's).
The album has 13 songs, and it lasts only 29 minutes and a few seconds. That's the only thing I can see I could have write up there at "Disadvantajes", but you know, those almost 30 minutes are so good, that I won't say it's a disadvantaje (thought it is for sure...). In this album, 10 songs are composed by Lennon and 3 by McCartney (there's no doubt Lennon was the leader of the band at 1964).
"A hard day's night" would also became the first film for the Bealtles, in wich you can hear the whole A side of the album. On the album Ringo doesn't compose
nor sung any song, but on the movie, he is kind of the main star.
The idea of the album cover (a lot of Beatles faces photographs) was taken from a scene in the film in which many photographers annoy the Beatles by taking numerous photos of them.
And now, the songs, are the following:
1. A Hard day's night: Main composer: Lennon; Singer: Lennon. This song was composed in one night. Richard Lester (the director of the film) was thinking about the tittle of the film, and the main song of it, and he ask Lennon for a good song that would represented the film. That night, thanks to something he heard to Ringo about the rough day he had at filming for the movie, he wrote the song. It´s a not slow but not very fast song, with Paul singing the bridges, and a weird piano fade out at the end, played by the producer, George Martin. Very famous the firts guitar chord from the beggining.
2. I should have known better: Main composer: Lennon; Singer: Lennon. Very nice and slow love song, well sung by Lennon, with a lovely harmonica played also by Lennon at the biggining at at every bridge.
3. If I fell: Main Composer: Lennon; Singer: Lennon and McCartney. This is one if my favourites song from this album. Very slow, and very very well sung by both Lennon and McCarteney in a perfect harmony. They sung diferent tunes, that fit just lovely. Just listen carefuly to the tune they sung, and you'll see what I'm talking about.
4. I'm happy just to dance with you: Main composer: Lennon; Singer: Harrison. Yes, Harrison doesn't composed any song for this album (well, he did, but they were kindly rejected), but he sung this one composed by Lennon. On this song, I like the second voices, the chorus, at the bridge, sung by Lennon and McCartney (you will hear more clearly this last one).
5. And I love her: Main composer: McCartney; Singer: McCartney. First song from the album composed and sung by Paul. A very slow one (the most slow, I'd say), very acoustic. For this song, Harrison played spanish guitar, and Ringo....castanets. Not one of the bests from the album, I'd say...
6. Tell me why: Main composer: Lennon; Singer: Lennon. One of my favourites (sorry, but I'm going to say the same thing about too many songs, but this is a great album, I have to....). Very fast, I'd say the faster from the album, with Lennon singing it, and McCartney singing a second voice in a diferent tune very weird. I like the shouts of Paul and George at the bridge part, very beatle...
7. Can't by me love: Main composer: McCartney; Singer: McCartney. Second songcomposed and sung by Paul, and, althought is not the best one, I'd say is the most famous of the album, with a lot of cover versions done of it in the las 40 years. The song is a clasic rock, 3 chords (C, F and G), and a good singing from Paul. There's an unofficial version (bootleg) I have with lovely second voices from Lennon and Harrison that I like even more than the original edited version. Paul is very good playing bass on this one.
8. Any time at all: Main composer: Lennon; Singer: Lennon. This was the first song of the B side, but this is kinda nonsense now, with the CD's. Anyway, a good song, lets say not fast not slow, with Paul singing the second "any time at all" at the begining.
9. I'll cry instead: Main composer: Lennon; Singer: Lennon. A slow nice song that talks about been left by the one you loved, and the reaction. I like the lyrics, specially when Lennon says "I'm gonna break their hearts all around the world", cause at the end, he'd do it...
10. Things we said today: Main composer: McCartney; Singer: McCartney. Third and last song composed and sung by Paul. Did is a good album, but not thanks to Paul, cause his songs are only three, and I'd say not the bests from the album. Maybe "Can't buy me love" is a good one, but this one and "And I love her" are not the bests songs composed by Paul. This one is a slow love song with a faster bridge. Is not a bad one, but is not from the bests...
11. When I get home: Main composer: Lennon; Singer: Lennon. A very "Beatle" begining on this song, with a "Ooooouuuooooaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!" shout. I like the voice of Lennon at this rock song, and also, McCartney's second voice is great. The song talks about wasting the time at been a Beatle, having a wife, a son (yes, Lennon was married at 1964 and with a son, not with Yoko yet, but married), a house and all that.
12. You can't do that: Main composer: Lennon; Singer: Lennon. Great song. Great great song. Is a very good rock and roll very well sung by Lennon, and with very beatles chorus or second voices sung by McCarteny and Harrison. Lovely the guitar solo played by Harrison (he was starting to be seen as a good guitar player, but his best would have to wait a few more years).
13. I'll be back: Main composer: Lennon; Singer: Lennon. Very nice slow love song. Played with acoustic guitars with Paul good at second voice. Another (again) of my favourites.
You already know the musicians, but here they are in case you don't:
-John Lennon: Rhythm Guitar, lead vocals, vocals and harmonica. -Paul McCartney: Bass guitar, lead vocals and vocals. -George Harrison: Lead guitar, lead vocals and vocals -Ringo Starr: Drums and lead vocals. -George Martin: Fifth beatle, and producer....
I liked this album from the very first time I heard it. And every song is good on it (cause every song is "Lennon-McCartney"). You must have this album in your collection. The album was also their open door to the States, that would mean the worldwide beatlemanis. This album, made the Beatles famous in the whole world.
Ciao!

There's no other group like the Beatles. Always good music.
A Hard Day's Nightmay have been The Beatles' first big-screen experience but, as they had ... more
become the biggest band in the world by the time of its production, the Moptops were able to ensure it wasa bit different from the band-movie norm. "We'd made it ...
