dusk, and the album about it
Review of Dusk And Her Embrace - Cradle Of Filth by
kuap
Advantages: The female vocalist in some of the songs
Disadvantages: No songs seem to stand out
This album starts of pretty typical CofF style, with the eerie sounding synth-type thing, closely followed by "Heaven Torn Asunder" which is nicely structured, with the usual pounding drums, and dynamic vocals. No song stands out as particularly bad on this album, but in reply to that, none of the tracks seem outstandingly brilliant. Sure, the guitar work, is technical and sounds pretty impressive, and the songs are well written, but they just don't ... ...because the songs are all pretty long, and the tempo changes often, giving the impression of a different song starting. Saying that, I find "A Gothic Romance" a very impressive song. Also, the choirs in "Dusk And Her Embrace" are a really nice touch. Cradle of Filth defintely have found the formula for their songs, and they don't look like changing it. The seem happy with the way their songs come out, but I find that the songs seem to blend together.. ...

Melodic Death Metal at the very top end
Review of Damage Done - Dark Tranquility by
daekfire
Advantages: Top class, filled with exceedingly good tracks
Disadvantages: Pure melodeath, if you don't like growls this isn't for you
...a little more attractive.
Damage Done: Quite a good song, has some variance in it but nothing I feel is extremely special
Cathode Ray Sunshine: Love the melodies and chorus, another of my favourites (this album has quite a lot of them)
The album rounds of with The Enemy; I, Deception and Ex Nihilio although I think I, Deception may vary depending on where you buy the album. They are all good songs but not quite at the very top end of the album, ... ...its powerful, melodic and poetic all very much at the same time. It has many hummable melodies and shout-along choruses. Perhaps a good introduction to the genre of Melodic Death Metal, I recommend it if you are curious or are finding an interest from certain things you have heard. You could see it as something of a step on from thrash, so if you enjoy thrash you may well enjoy this, being open minded to death growls is a plus. ...

Good Album but not Master
Review of Death Magnetic - Metallica by
amcintyre15
Advantages: Kirk's Solos back, songs more varied and better than St Anger, a couple of epics.
Disadvantages: Not as good as some over-the-top reviewers have said.
...also a stand-out song on Death Magnetic, in some ways, it's sad to see them take such a move away from the old Unforgivens, however what they have created is outstanding. Despite some good quality songs on this record, there are a few that aren't bad, but turn into a drag when your listening to them. Songs like Broken, Beat and Scarred take a while to get into after the somewhat slow start.
As a guitar player myself its a blessing to hear Kirk back ... ...most fans would agree that the absence of the guitar solos was a key reason for the disappointment of St Anger. Despite all these positives, we shouldn't be too optimistic. There has been a lot of speculation that this album would be a 'Neo-Master of Puppets.' In my opinion, this album is a good piece of work that shouldn't be judged in that way, as that will only let down a lot of hyped Metallica fans. The Metallica sound has evolved too much to ...
