A large victory
Advantages: Summation of hits from greatest band ever! Disadvantages: Too much eighties stuff, not enough modern
This is the second 'greatest hits' package from my all-time favourite band, the genre-bending masters of metal, Faith No More.
Firstly, i must say that i recommend the 'Who cares a lot?' greatest hits more, because it includes incredible unreleased tracks like; 'The World is yours'.
But back to this; for non-believers, Faith No More were founded by bassist Billy Gould; lover of exotic 'prescription pick-me-ups' and a demon of a player, Mike Bordin; ... ...Word spread like wildfire about this exciting new band, with the sheen of keyboards offsetting glistening metallic guitar.
Faith No More were signed up by Slash records for the follow-up, 'Introduce Yourself', a much more polished and cohesive album, although Chuck's voice was as punky and abrasive as ever. The album scored a massive hit with the new-improved version of 'We care a lot', and also included 'Anne's Song' and 'Introduce Yourself'. But ...

Album of the year, band of the decade
Advantages: Incredibly moving swansong for my fave band ever Disadvantages: Faith No More are No More
This was it, the final in a gripping instalment of challenging and satisfyingly diverse albums released by this incredible band of gifted musicians.
Faith No More were never a band to follow trends, but they did always grow with their audience. If 'The Real Thing' was for the teens, 'Angel Dust' for the smart twenty-somethings, and 'King for a day...' for a more mature age-group again, then this is the middle-age Faith No More. That is, incredibly ... ...an ear for timeless music. A year after this, the band called it a day, and their ilk will not be heard of again.
They were a unique band in that, unlike a lot of bands today who chase fame and notoriety, FNM were classically-trained musicians, death metal fans, thrash fans, pop music fans, visionaries and masters of their instruments thrown together. They didn't fit the 'friends in a band' mould, because they weren't friends. Well, maybe the founder ...

Heron on Crack
Advantages: Intriguingly, disconcertingly varied collection of myriad styles. Disadvantages: Jim Martin's guitar is sadly under-used.
Faith No More's second album with Mike Patton was the first on which his strange influence became a driving force, deviating vastly in many cases from the previous huge-selling alternative metal release 'The Real Thing' as the band explored more unusual, experimental territory more in the vein of Patton's side-project Mr. Bungle.
Many of the songs, particularly the singles towards the beginning of the album, stick to the highly influential funk ... ...along with the likes of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, while some of the later songs expand on the hip hop influence of 'The Real Thing,' making this album largely, and sadly responsible for the rap metal boom of the late nineties, which now thankfully seems to have slumped again. I can't imagine any other situation where I would be recommending an album favoured by Fieldy, the maize-field-haired gangsta bassist from Korn, but the impact of 'Angel Dust' ...

Kings in their lifetime
Advantages: More mighty magnificence minus Martin Disadvantages: Not quite as good as 'Angel Dust'
Okay, a review of my favourite band's fifth studio album. Here goes....
As you may know, Faith No More were about the most credible band anywhere ever, in 1993. After the mighty and defining 'Angel Dust', Faith No More could do anything. They were impossibly cool. Not many groups would take an album as successful and loved as 'The Real Thing', and radically alter their sound and vocals to the point of almost alienating their original fanbase. But ... ...terms. Even their record company begged them to make 'Angel Dust' more commercial. But after that, the band were legends, both in their music and radically different characters, both in personalities and appearances.
Mike Patton was the idol, thick, slicked black hair, goatee, eyebrow ring and menacing smile. in 1992, Mike Patton had metamorphasised from long-haired goofy prankster in surf shorts, to the picture of cynical youth, both in his attitudes ...

Nu-metal before nu-metal existed
Advantages: A great rock album Disadvantages: None
...The slower, thoughtful Real Thing shows their ability to tackle a slightly different song as this is spacier and lighter than the previous tracks. The superb Underwater Love, a really classy rock song with more larynx stretching from Patten, is my favourite number on the whole record, a nice soaring chorus.
The Morning After reprises some of the title track but without some of the chutzpah of it, a bit moodier and deep and is the weakest song on ... ...this song is about 2 and three-quarters for me. Woodpecker From Mars, one of the strangest songtitles I'm sure you'll agree, is actually a seven minute instrumental. If you like instrumentals, this is for you. It again showcases the bands musical ability, if anyone was still doubting it after hearing the record before.
This is nu-metal before the term was invented. It is also in parts funk-rock, thrash metal and straight out heavy metal. FNM were ...
