Advantages: Metallica are back, fantastic partly-thrashing progressive riff based metal music with a contemporary touch Disadvantages: Awful mixing has destroyed dynamics adding severe digital distortion with too much compression used
...song in the context of Death Magnetic, but it sits in the lower tier of this CD. So when this album hit, people really weren't expecting the shocker of an album I have here in my hands (Shocking in both very good and bad ways)!
So that brings me onto my humongous review of the album after my brief history lesson, first I will talk a bit about the sound of the album and sum it up with one word. Yes, you got that right, ONE WORD!
'Death Magnetic' ... ...the albums main topic is Death and Suicide, hence the dirty dark production and evil sound we have on this CD.
The chorus that blows 'Enter Sandman' off the face of the earth astonishingly catches you out at 2 minutes and 24 seconds "Hunt you down without mercy, hunt you down all nightmare long. Feel us breathe upon your face. Feel us shift, every move we trace…." This is unbelievable, probably their best chorus from at least the last 15 years, ...
Advantages: No crap sounding snare drum Woo hoo! Disadvantages: Sound quality on download
Not the best album they have released, but none the less a lot of the songs are good listening.
The best change that has occured is the removal of the stupid untuned snare drum from the St anger album. They said before the album was released that the material produced would be a simallar style to that of "master of puppets", Personally I don't think the magic has quite returned. The best songs on the album are Cyanide and The day that never comes.

Advantages: Continuation of Metallica's legacy Disadvantages: Continuing St. Anger's direction of music.
...waited for the release of death magnetic since the day i heard st. anger. in my mind i believed that metallica couldn't come up with anything worse than st. anger. luckily i was right. eventhough death magnetic is definitely better than the previous album, can it be considered as a true 'metallica' cd? self plagarism. that's what comes to mind when you listen to metallica's new album. the day that never comes = fade to black & one that was just your ... ...7-8 minute long songs, whereas death magnetic offers nothing but traditional riffs that pretty much repeat on end. the song structures are definitely a lot less complex compared to what they used to be. most songs on death magnetic last more than 7 minutes, but all they have is a simple 'verse/chorus/verse' pattern instead of the 'long intro/heavy jam/verse/even heavier jam/chorus/bridge/insane solo/outro'. metallica probably wanted to sound 'raw' ...
Advantages: The title track is pretty good. Disadvantages: The tracks are far too long and the vocals lack any real depth of power.
Metallica formed back in 1981 and have to date released a grand total of eight studio albums. 'St. Anger' is the latest of which and was given its release upon the world in June 2003. It took them from May 2002 until April 2003 to record, and all I can say of this matter is that it took them far too long to record such a disappointing album in my opinion. You'd think that James Hetfield would have been able to put down much better vocals in a year ... ...exactly make the best of first impressions here. The track is in fact really quite awful, and containing lyrics of 'Frantic tick tick, tick tick tick tock' it isn't exactly the most intelligent of tracks in the world. For an album that starts so wrong footed, it is hardly surprising then that as the album continues it fails to impress. To the front of the album is a sticker that states '11 New Songs; Over 75 minutes of music' and I have to tell you ...
