Advantages: It's the best Whitesnake album in 20 years!
Disadvantages: It might be their last!

...was still a very very good album, but sadly nothing since has been worthy of the Whitesnake name. Until now that is.... This album straddles the old and the new(er) versions of the band and picks from the best of both worlds. The current band has something that was missing from the late 80's and 90's band line-ups - and that something is 'soul'. ...a couple of very good ballads, in the style that only David Coverdale can do.... and that voice... oh yeah, he may be well in his mid 50's but that voice is still in very fine fettle indeed. Sounding more mature, as it should do, perhaps a wee bit deeper and more resonant than the early years, there must be a good few years left in this beast yet! ...not usually a fan of greatest hits albums, I do buy them If it's a band I love, but they always seem to get the song choices wrong, don't they? But this time I think they got it right, from the opening track 'Nothin' But A Good Time', you are instantly pulled back to the 80's, with guitar, drums, and simple lyrics that you will find yourself dancing and singing along to, the main aim is to have fun. ...guitar tune, another song to shout along to, and do air guitar to the fantastic solo (just don't let anyone see you..... it never looks as good as you think it does). The upbeat feel continues on with 'Unskinny Bop', and then the tempo is brought down with the fantastic power ballad - 'Every Rose Has It's Thorn'. Okay, I am not a Linkin Park fan, in fact I have never really liked them, so when my 13 year old said he wanted the new CD I thought I would buy it and then, for conversations sake, listen to it.....well, it was in my car for the last 3 weeks, and now he finally has it. I am not sure if Linkin Park are American punk, post punk, mosh rock, or a mixture of all, what I do know is that this is, in my opinion, a very strong album. The first track, "Wake" ...
...to what one would expect at the end of a rock opera, or a performance artist, trapeze etc, finishing their act, seemed like a bit of a strange opener, but not unpleasant. "Given Up" - very 'moshy' quite fast, gets the foot tapping if driving, and at home when noone was looking, I did have a bit of a 'fling myself about' moment, like this track a lot. ...when after the gentleness of Hysteria and a soft cuddle with your new fella. It'll either having you reach for the volume knob to turn it up or turn it down. I liked it, simply because it was fun, after such a serious track. It tells you to 'stand up' We're back almost into bop mode again. The last track 'Love and Affection' could have been another 'Hysteria' but it seems to lack something, I think because it sounds so similar. It bares the mark ...
...spoils it. Its again gentle and reflective. It doesn't have the same broodiness of 'Hysteria'. It would have felt better on a follow up album. It's still a good piece to finish an album but not a rock album. They were essentially a commercial rock band unlike others, they had chosen to conform, whether it was to make money or get popular fast.
