Neil Percival Young was born on November 12, 1945 in Ontario, Canada to Scott Young, a sportswriter and novelist and Edna-Ragland (Russy). His parents decided to part ways when he was 12. her mother moved to her family home in Winnipeg, Manitoba and here young Neil began his distinguished music career.
Neil Young is a true artist, a very highly gifted singer, song-writer, musician who was at ease with number of musical instruments like piano, harmonica and of course who can forget his claw-hammer acoustic guitar. With his electric guitar solos he drove his fans to frenzy.
I cann’t but say the selection of songs in the album couldn't been better just have a look at the least of songs this album contains: (1) Harvest ( 2) Heart of Gold (3) A Man Needs AMaid (4) Out on the week end (5) Needle and the damage is done (6)There’s a world (7) Alabama (8) Are you ready for the country (9) Old man (10) Words
All these songs transcends age and all barriers.
After Gold Rush he went through a very bad period in his life in a sense that he had to withstand the trauma of a broken marriage, got himself a severely injured back and amid all this came "Harvest" no doubt the best collection of song by Neil Young in which he had as guest artists like James Tailor and Linda Rondstat. In Harvest Neil Young broods on love like in “A Man Needs A Maid”.
He says "I will go some where I don’t know when I was watching a movie with a friend I fell in love with the actress. She was playing a part that I could understand Maid, a man needs a maid When will I see you again?"
Talking about Drug abuse in “The Needle And The Damage Is Done” Young ruminates
"..I’ve seen the needle, and the damage is done A little part of it in everyone But every junki’s setting sun…. " probably his grave concern on drug abuse from personal experiences.
He is been quite unequivocal in raing his voice against racism as in “Alabama” he is philosophical about it and puts anger poetically saying.. "Oh Alabama Banjos playing through the broken glass Windows down in Alabama See the old folks tied in white ropes Hear the banjos.. Don’t it take you down home?"
Throughout the album Neil Young is mellow or pensive for instance in “Old man” he seems to associate destiny which no human being can ecape and rightly so "..Old man take a look at my life.. I need some one to love me the whole day through All one look in my eyes and you can tell it’s true Lullabies look in your eyes run around the same old town."
Yet he is an eternal optimist and always in search of “A heart of gold” "I have been to Hollywood, I’ve been to Redwood I crossed the Ocean for a heart of gold I’ve been in my mind, it’s such a thin line That keeps me searching for a heart of gold. I’m getting old Keeps me searching…"
"I wanna live, I wanna give...it's these expressions I never give that keep me searching for a heart of gold. And I'm getting old." That’s typical Neil Young for he is never bored of life, this makes life worth living.
Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan, John Lenon, Jimi Hendrix –probably the best in terms of talent, versatality, creativity.
I am a diehard Beatles maniac but okay take one of the best of Beatles album but let me keep "Harvest" any day, please.
