Advantages: Perfect songs, time taken on it. Disadvantages: None!
The Smiths are one of those very rare and fortunate bands who never released a poor album. Of course, there was a reason for this, the output from the songwriting partnership of Morrissey and Marr was one of musical history's finest. From 'Hand In Glove' all the way to 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out', they produced some of the greatest songs of the 80's, and all time, in fact. The only problem is, in releasing a greatest hits album, how would they fit so many great songs on to one CD?
Answer. By packing that one CD with 23 songs, which personally I didn't realise was possible. And these 23 songs really do showcase the verybest of the Smiths. It's one of those best ofs which really has had a lot of thought put into it, and this has caused it to have a lot more meaning and direction than your average money-spindling greatest ...
Advantages: fantastic!! one of the best brit bands ever, and my fave cd ever Disadvantages: the only disadvantage is that they split up! :-(
23 of the best tracks by British classics The Smiths (Morrissey, Marr et al.) - how good is this?
For the uninitiated, The Smiths were only around for about 6 years in the 1980s but they produced some brilliant songs, achieving in those years what it takes some other artists twice as many years to achieve. Practically inventing the template for 1990s Britpop a la Suede, Pulp and The Stone Roses and also having an influence on the likes of Blur and Oasis is part of their lasting legacy. This album provides an excellent introduction to this.
"Panic" sounds innocent enough, a nice polite indie anthem, but delving into darker waters with the "hang the DJ" part in the second half with what sounds like little children singing along in the background, a bit like Alice Cooper's "School's Out" - innocent on the outside but with something ...
Advantages: variety of great songs Disadvantages: a couple of naff songs and shortened version of Piano man
Billy Joel is without a doubt at times a GENIUS! The unfortunate thing is he tends to be a musician who makes good songs, not good albums. That is why i chose to buy this compilation of the best of.
For 8£ you get a variety of his hits, some even live recordings which is a bonus. The songs range throughout his timeline of classics, some not as good as others i will admit.
Tracks like Good Night Saigon (sp?) are amazing and emotional and as epic as the great bearded man can get. She's always a woman, i'm ashamed to say, is one of my favourite songs which is hard for a jazz pianist to admit without feeling slightly demasculated.
As a pianist Billy Joel's unique and resourceful solo's and backing make for effective and easy listening.
On the downside his more comercial, tracks such as Uptown girl grace the line up which i ...
