Cecilia Bartoli's voice, for example, or listen to the dramatic wildness of Harnoncourt's conducting, or the gorgeously crisp string playing--but don't expect anything resembling tension in the plot. The story is simple and repetitive; each time the warrior Rinaldo remembers his military duties, Armida, the sorceress, calls him back to a life of love. Haydn has nothing of Mozart's psychological insight, and fails to invest the conventions of opera seria with the genius of his contemporary. That said, the conventions are still well observed, and the work could hardly be performed better than it is here: Bartoli is simply superb, the delicious coloratura Patricia Petibon gives Zelmira a wonderful heroic edge, and Harnoncourt keeps everything crackling along. And if Christoph Prégardien is less secure in the coloratura passagework than in the lyrical sections, his is still a gorgeous tenor voice worth catching on disc. --Warwick Thompson

Advantages: Good range of films Disadvantages: pricey
The Haydn cinema on the Mariahilferstraße (on the left hand side if you are heading out of town), by Zieglergasse underground station is another of Vienna's English cinemas. The tickets are a little bit more expensive than at the Artis, although the screens are slightly bigger, and the seats a bit more comfortable.
The popcorn is very salty, and drinks from the cinema are very expensive. If you want a beer before the film then you are better off visiting "Servus" the bar next door, as the beer is good there. The films are always very current, literally new releases and the queues are not too bad.
Unlike the Artis, the films are often in their original versions and then subtitled in German, which means that the cinema as a result tends to be fuller thatn others showing original versions without subtitles. The whole cinema is ...

Advantages: Excellent recording and product Disadvantages: Pricey - but very much worth every penny!
I am the proud owner of this recording and it has pride of place in my collection. There's a lot to say about this, so I will hopefully cover as much as I can!
HAYDN
Franz Joseph Haydn is the father of classical music in its true sense. He lived in Austria between 1732 and 1809, and invented the symphony and the string quartet. during his life, he composed over 100 symphonies, and dozens of other works, including concertos, string quartets, quintets, chamber music, masses and oratorios. Haydn was a religious person, and it may be because of this that his greatest works include masses and oratorios (religious themes set to music). There is so much to say about him, but more information can be found on various websites and books.

Two CD set: Orpheus and Euridice
Awarded the Gramophone award in 2002, Orpheus and Euridice is a recording of Hadyn's last opera. It is an opera seria relating the tragic Greek myth. The opera was never performed in Haydn'd lifetime.
The myth in a nutshell goes as follows. Eurydice, a nymph, is in despair as she contemplates her forthcoming marriage to Arideus. She is ready to die, but Orpheus saves her life by playing his harp and singing. Eurydice?s father, Creon, agrees to let her to marry Orpheus. When Eurydice is bitten by a snake and dies, Orpheus is inconsolable. He consults the Sibyl, who takes him to the underworld to search for her.
