I don't know if many of you remember this show but it used to come on Sky One in about 1999/2000 and was also repeated by Channel 5 in about 2003. It has now finally been released on DVD so I thought I would do a short review on the new boxset just to refresh your memories about why this show is so good and why you should purchase the box set or not.
I purchased the DVD boxset for 'Popular: Season one' for around #25.00 which, I thought was a really good price, even just for the episodes alone. I had been waiting a long time for this release and was so happy when it arrived so I could not only watch the episodes again but so I could also catch up with the ones I missed in DVD quality. Thus Vivaldi wrotes sonnets to accompany his music and to establish each thought in his mind.
It is obvious to say then that Concerto is labelled Spring through to Winter, with three movements within each season.
Most form again adopts the ABA construction, a favorite of Vivaldi.
These are as follows:
1: Spring: Concerto No.1 in E Major
Allegro / Largo / Allegro
This I think, is the most well known of the Concertos, and has been used on numerous car adverts and airline adverts. This is what most people remember Nigel Kennedy playing at the very beginning of Nigel Mania!!!!
The string compostion reflects the freshness of spring and depending on what recording you buy (trust me there is loads of
choice!) this normally sells the album, this movement is the most played also by a leading Classical Radio.
