Advantages: Exciting and moving performance, fine singers, orchestra and conductor
Disadvantages: None really

...Introduction: There is nothing to beat the thrill of a top quality live concert. Once in a while an audience will get drawn into the music, creating an unbeatable emotionally meaningful experience. It doesn't happen often, even with the best combination of artists, one can still fail to press that "X Factor" button that provides everything needed for something special. It happens even less frequently in the recording studio, and so when both the concert AND the resulting CD produce a performance which captures that special thrill - you know that you've got a special event in your hands. One of the things I really enjoy doing is persuading people to try music they might not otherwise have explored and when it comes to Joseph Haydn - this is the recording which makes me jump around my friends and acquaintances with the over... Advantages: Pleasant melodies, good structure
Disadvantages: not terribly adventurous in harmony

...Franz Joseph Haydn's music is interesting as it is pleasant to listen to. Although he is actually Austrian, most of Haydn's music was written in Hungary for Prince Esterhazy's twice weekly dinner parties. Which meant that many of Haydn's symphonies and string quartets were written in less than four days - quite an achievement, when you consider the length of time his contemporaries spent writing similar works. Haydn wrote and conducted high standard early classical style classics for a small group of musicians who were employed by the Prince. And it is in many of Haydn's pieces that we can begin to have an insight into the life of him and his musicians. For example, the "Surprise Symphony" was written with the party gusts in mind. It begins in a plodding, slow mesmerising rhythm, which the already bloated and drowsy guests... Read review

Operatic Orpheus
Review of Orpheus and Euridice - Haydn by  MAFARRIMOND

Advantages: Original instruments, classical greek myth
Disadvantages: Serious and tragic

...Two CD set: Orpheus and Euridice Awarded the Gramophone award in 2002, Orpheus and Euridice is a recording of Hadyn's last opera. It is an opera seria relating the tragic Greek myth. The opera was never performed in Haydn'd lifetime. The myth in a nutshell goes as follows. Eurydice, a nymph, is in despair as she contemplates her forthcoming marriage to Arideus. She is ready to die, but Orpheus saves her life by playing his harp and singing. Eurydice’s father, Creon, agrees to let her to marry Orpheus. When Eurydice is bitten by a snake and dies, Orpheus is inconsolable. He consults the Sibyl, who takes him to the underworld to search for her. Pluto allows Orpheus to search for Eurydice in the Elysian fields, but Orpheus is warned not to look at his wife. He cannot resist glancing at her, and loses her for a second time. As he...
