...Now that I can use my computer I thought I’d share my views and feelings on the artist Mauro Picotto – one of the most promising DJs and producers to come from Italy so far. It may well be true that he hasn’t quite made as huge an impact in the UK, but already we’ve heard the masterpieces like Lizard, Komodo and the quite incredible Proximus! I’ve been downloading many songs from Napster, by Picotto, but this has only helped me to make decisions in actually buying the CDs from him, and various other artists that work with him. I don’t really now that much about Picotto himself, but all I can say is that the music he makes is some of the greatest I have ever listened to! ...Madchester maestros Inspiral Carpets used to have an expression that they used on their merchandising and material to describe their act. The blatantly provocative strapline ran 'As Cool as f***'. Now if anyone actually merited that boast it was not the Northern funsters with their swirling organ and seductive tunes, it was the hippest of all hip bands, the darkly dazzling Velvet Underground, the darlings of namedroppers everywhere. Back in the Seventies you were granted instant street cred and a reputation as a real wild child if you hinted that you understood the grim fascinations of the Velvets. Now if their contemporaries, The Doors, are all about romance, sex and death, the Velvets are drugs, fetish and sleaze and Lou Reed is the perverse druggie to Morrison's Lizard King. Look beyond that scary face and the large orange classes, its all in the music. Mauro Picotto is better known as the Lizard man and for good reason.
