Never a band known for understatement, this is by far their biggest and best album yet, 11 epic tracks that are impressively grandiose and proudly hyperbolic. Where other bands would be content with a string section, Within Temptation incorporate an entire orchestra (plus a choir). In addition, they also sample the sounds of machine guns, explosions, car crashes and even Winston Churchill. Complemented by Sharon den Adel's impressive vocal range, it all works spectacularly, evoking imagery of men on horseback wielding axes. Each song is a mini-saga, from "The Howling" with its suggestions of Middle Earth battlefields to the anti-war "Our Solemn Hour", which features a Latin chorus, "Sanctus espiritus," taken from Roman Catholic mass. Only the radio-friendly and relatively understated ballads "All I Need" and "Forgiven" sound out of place, (though the orchestra still features on the former). Fortunately, everything else on The Heart of Everything sounds like barbarian soundtrack music. Which is to say that this is a proper heavy metal music. --Ted Kord

A little history of the band…..
Within Temptation are a Dutch gothic rock band which formed in 1996 in which they released there first album Enter. There style of music is a bit different from the main music on the ... ...phrases.

5. The Heart of Everything = 3/5
This song is one of my least favourite but is still a good song. I think it’s due to Sharon’s voice not being pushed as much as it is in other songs on the album. The song is great due to it being full of anger and raw emotion. The weird voices in the background spoil the song. However I do think the lyrics:
“Open your eyes
Save yourself from fading away now, don’t let it go”

...did, and it is "The Heart of Everything" which I am going to look at in this review.
**The Band**
The band are from The Netherlands, and as I mentioned before, were formed in 1996. The band is comprised of vocalist Sharon den Adel, Robert Westerholt and Ruud Adrianus Jolie on guitar, Joroen van Veen playing bass, Martijn Spierenburg on keyboards and Stephen van Haestregt on drums. Although you may as well just forget about the rest of the band ... ...stand out.
Before "The Heart of Everything", the band have had four previous albums, Enter (1997), The Dance (1998), Mother Earth (2000) and The Silent Force (2006).
The Heart of Everything was released on the 9th March 2007.
**The Cover**
The cover of the album is the first clue that Within Temptation is a gothic band. The picture on the front shows Sharon den Adel in a corseted dress, blindfolded and sitting on a high backed chair. The atmosphere ...

Advantages: very few Disadvantages: a total change
...album was released - The heart of everything - and so, I will cut to the heart of the matter. Sharons wonderful voice is mostly drowned out by the mainstream music that the band have become obsessed with - it sounds like evanescence with a faint singer in teh background who can actually sing.
As much as I love their older material, this album was always going to dissapoint the original group of fans.
Sure, it's a decent album, but WT have forgotten ...

Advantages: Great voice, good songs Disadvantages: Same old
This album sees the band sticking to the same formula, allbeit winning formula as the last album the silent force. The songs conjure up a gothic fairy tale landscape full of hope, despair and a longing for better times. Sharron den adel's voice is still beautifully gentle amid the the thundering guitars. One of the problem's I have with this album is that the song construction is pretty much similar for every song. We have a gentle intro in which sharron's ... ...heavy guitars and drums. This is done very well, but in every song! After 11 songs it does sound a bit samey. The guitars don't seem to have much colour to them either, always the same rhythmn and heavy feel to them.Having said that they do write good songs with good choruses. My main problem with this album is a lack of a musical step foward from the last album.Great bands of the past have always pushed themselves as songwriters and experimented with ...
