would have to strike back with a powerful record if they were to retain their credibility. They recruited Elf vocalist Ronnie James Dio, whose melodramatic vibrato shuddered with menace, and in 1980, they releasedHeaven and Hell, their most potent offering sinceMaster of Reality. Faster and more theatrical than Sabbath's earlier oeuvre,Heaven and Hellfeatures the dynamic seven-minute title track, which builds from a lazy throb to a high-octane roar, and the dynamic "Die Young," which segues from an uptempo saunter to a flamboyant midsection strangely reminiscent of Queen. Although the album helped build Sabbath a younger, more enthusiastic fan base, Dio only remained with the band for one more studio album, after which Sabbath's star slowly began to fade.--Jon Wiederhorn

By the end of the seventies, Black Sabbath had seem to have run their course, the albums were not selling so well, critical acclaim for their work was a thing of the past and frontman Ozzy Osbourne had quit the band. How do you come back from the brink under those circumstances. Against all the odds Balck Sabbath managed to pull off the ultimate coup, they recruited new frontman Ronnie James Dio and returned with what was widely hailed as their best album for almost a decade with 1980s Heaven and Hell.
Dio had come to prominence with country rock and blues outfit Elf, but it was as the frontman of Richie Blackmores Rainbow that he really perfected the style and voice that was to become his trademark. After a string of classic rock albums with Rainbow his placed was taken by the more commercial Graham Bonnett and Dio found himself fronting the perfect vehicle for his mysical lyrics, awesome voice and charismatic stage presence. Whilst many people thought that Sabbath could not continue without Osbourne, the musical power house of Iommi, Butler and Ward were still on the team and the new line up came up with a set of songs that remain classics to this day.
As Neon Knights screams into action the influence of Dios supernatural lyrics and songwriting style becomes apparent, but along with the new found dark qualities of the new boy, there is also the old Sabbath, albeit refreshed, re-energised and chomping at the bit. The solid bass and drum twin attack provides a base for Iommis trademark guitar. The lyrics may be a bit cliche, but Dio has a way with words better than most rock singers and manages to keep things credible enough even when weaving the tales from his imaginary worlds, this is classic rock, no apologies, no regrets, the old Sabbath taking their place as masters of their genre once more.
By contrast accousic guitars duel with a high ended bassline on Children of the Sea, before the familiar full on sound is dropped into place. A slower and mournful song but with the pomp and epic granduer that sets this album on a pedestal. This song would have been at home on Dio`s defining album Rainbow Rising from some years before. Fans of early Rainbow will find much to admire on this album.
An almost funky bass line opens Lady Evil, typical Dio imagary being delivered on top of a punchy and phased out guitar riff. Dios voice stands out in all of its glory on the chorus and demonstrates why he was regarded as the best voice in rock music at the time.
The title track is the centre piece of the whole album, dark and quasi-religious, powerful and brooding. An epic guitar riff opens the song, one of Iommis finest, to drop away leaving just a drum and bass backbeat on which Dio`s solitary voice rises to fill all available space. Guitars crash and scream and basses pound, drums roll and all the time the voice manages to stay clear and in command. This is a masterclass in rock and metal songwriting and sounds as freah and original today as it did 24 years ago.
Keyboards wash into this track and a chorus pedal affected guitar plays its lonely solo, soon to be joined by a solid backbeat so that it can riff indulgently in crazy spirals all through the song, Die Young. The changes of pace, and nocturne-like piano passages stand along side the standard rock sounds to create one of the clever songs on the album. Walk Away is more upbeat riffing from Iommi and some wonderful fast paced on the octave bass lines from Butler, big choruses take this song out of the darker nature that dominates much of this album. Lonely is The Word is a slow and powerful lilt through standard metal territory, the guitars sounding at times like The Scorpions, a bit of a filler for such a classic album, but still a cracking song by anyone standards.
This is the album that launced a thousand immitations, but none of them were able to steal the thunder of this classic work. Even if you are not a fan of the heavy rock and metal genre, these songs have an almost orchestral quality and may appeal to a range of listeners. Its the sort of thing Wagner would have done if he had been born in 1962 and been given a Gibson Les Paul for his tenth birthday.
Advantages: Some good songs... Disadvantages: and some not so good ones - not the Sabbath I know and love
...on here has to be Heaven and Hell itself - it resembles Black Sabbath more than any other song on this album, in both senses - the band and the song from their first album. It has an excellent riff and Dio really does put a lot of balls into the singing on this song, lending it a truly epic feel.
Overall, a good attempt by Dio to breath some life back into the heavy metal monster, but ultimately it falls a little flat in comparison to their earlier ...

Advantages: Nice new sound, very catchy Disadvantages: None
Heaven and Hell is the first Black Sabbath album after the departure of Ozzy Osbourne, the album was their 9th album. The change in personnel gave both Ozzy himself and Black Sabbath a new release of life, following some rather uneventful albums. Black Sabbath's improvement was short-lived but centered much around new singer Ronny James Dio who gave the band a new sound.
Black Sabbath have a very wholesome sound on the tracks on this album. Lady ... ...of the band's best albums to date and definitely my favourite after the initial period of success the band had around 1970.

Advantages: A must for fans Disadvantages: Not a lot that is new here...
Whilst looking through the H?s in HMV (metal section ? checking out Helloween, if I am honest), I spotted this album ? heck it was actually glaring at me, maybe even leaping out to get my attention. I was curious, but cannot say I was rushing to get my wallet out and take it to the till, my hands all a tremble. No, there was none of that. I knew basically who Heaven and Hell were, but thought of buying a brand new by them was not at the top of my list of priorities?
Who are Heaven and Hell?
When Ozzy Osbourne left BlackSabbath he was replaced on vocals by ex Rainbow frontman Ronnie James Dio. The quintet of Toni Iommi, ?Geezer? Butler, Bill Ward and Ronnie created one of the greatest albums of all time ? Heaven and Hell (1980). Bill Ward left soon after and replaced by Vinnie Appice and then released and other album ?Mob ...

James Dio - Recorded another album with Rainbow, then joined BlackSabbath, recording the stunning Heaven and Hell album. Created Dio in the mid eighties.
Drums - Cozy Powell - Featured in several bands and recorded several solo albums. A top drummer, sadly passed away in 1998.
One thing that strikes me about this album is that it is only just over thirty three minutes long, and that is quite short. Another thing is that it is over thirty years old! Yet, to me, it still sounds as fresh and energetic now as it did when I first heard it as a pimple faced teenager.

Whilst Deep Purple produced some absolute classics with both Ian Gillan and David Coverdale, at times the imaginative songwriting spark just didn't appear, especially in the later years.
Long Live Rock and Roll is RAINBOW at the peak of their creativity - just as maybe MACHINE HEAD was for Deep Purple.
Whilst the 1970's seemed to get bogged down with overly long progressive rock epics, and before the NWOBHM took a real hold - a bridge between the two was needed, and this album was it.
Taking the 70's guitar feel of classic Purple, adding a touch a classic/progressive rock influence, and bundled into one neat package by legendary producer Martin Birch (who later produced the Dio/BlackSabbath classic HEAVEN AND HELL, as well as the best of the IRON MAIDEN albums)
The title track is classic Blackmore/Purple - catchy riffs ...

Album Notes
Black Sabbath: Ronnie James Dio (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Geezer Butler (bass); Bill Ward (drums). Additional personnel: Geoff Nicholls (keyboards). Recorded at Criteria Recording Studios, Miami, Florida and Studio Ferber, Paris, France. While Black Sabbath remained one of heavy metal's top concert draws throughout the late '70s, the band's albums of the era proved to not be on par with its earlier work. This creative weakness was what caused vocalist Ozzy Osbourne to split from the band in 1979 to launch a highly successful solo career. Sabbath used the opportunity to refocus its direction, eventually replacing the group's batty frontman with ex-Rainbow member Ronnie James Dio. The new line-up's first album, 1980's HEAVEN AND HELL, proved to be Black Sabbath's most successful (both commercially and artistically) in a long time. The opening number, "Neon Knights," remains one of Sabbath's most ferocious, while "Children of the Sea" alternates between dark, brooding metal and a gentle melodicism that's stressed even further on "Lady Evil" and "Die Young."
