Helene Grimaud is one of the pianistic phenomena of our day, a true heir to the mavericks ... more
of the keyboard stretching back to Liszt. This revealing film tells her story, moving from early musical promise to a Paris Conservatoire education and star career with recording contract, through the point where her enduring love of the wild - and wolves in particular - caused her to break with the convention of that life. We see her at home in New York State where she founded her own Wolf Conservation Centre, we hear her talk about the pressures on a modern musician and life on the road and, of course, we hear her play, in particular Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto and the First Piano Concerto of Brahms.
Advantages: Certificate PG so it's suitable for nearly everyone Disadvantages: The cinema is expensive and this film is very average
This film is due on general release in the UK shortly but I thought I'd write about it as I had a sneak preview.
This PG film directed by Garry Marshall stars Kate Hudson as Helen Harris, a woman who "inherits" guardianship of her nieces and nephew when her sister and brother-in-law die in an accident. Joan Cusack and John Corbett co-star. The children are played rather well by Hayden Panettiere (Audrey), Spencer Breslin (Henry) and Abigail Breslin (Sarah).
Helen's glamourous New York modelling world is turned upside down as she tries to be a parent. Her sister Jenny already has children and can't resist interfering. Gradually the two women come to an understanding, as they also come to terms with the loss of their other sister. Jenny doesn't work and she's rather self-righteous but she's actually quite jealous of her sister ...
Advantages: Gives a Slightly Different Version of Events Disadvantages: Is A Bit Long
Alexandros takes pity on him and saves him bringing him up as his own son and renaming him Paris.
A few years later the now grown up Paris played by Matthew Marsden, chases a stray goat into a cave. Overheated from the run he takes a sip of water and starts to feel dizzy and a vision appears before him of the three goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. The goddesses are having a debate about who is the fairest among them and they have decided that Paris is to choose the winner. In order to sway his judgement they each offer a prize for picking them. Athena offers great wisdom, Hera offers great Kingdoms and wealth and Aphrodite offers the most beautiful woman in the world and shows Paris a vision of Helen.
At the same time that Paris is looking at this vision of Helen, she is also seeing his face through a vision in a pool.

Advantages: great film great price Disadvantages: n/a
If you have read my reviews by now you may have guessed that i love a chick flick and raising helen is another one that i loved.
Starring Kate Hudson, Joan Cusack and Helen Mirren, this film is about Helen Harris a smart city women who works hard and plays harder and her life is turned upside down when her sister is killed and she is made guardian of her three children who are anything but perfect angels. Helen has to buy a new apartment, move out of the city and in the end also has to change her job as well.
In this film you get to see the transition of Helen from the cool aunt to the mum figure where she struggles to make the right decision which is not necessarily the fun decision that the children had hope for. But as all good chick flicks she finds love in in the end and everything ends happily ever after.
Overall a great ...
