If you are wanting a really good and funny summer read you won't go far wrong if you choose Raffaella Barker's "Hens Dancing" - as the book was published in 2000 I am probably preaching to the converted, but I have to admit this book was new to me when I read it last week. ~~The Author~~ Raffaella Barker was born in London in 1964 and moved to Norfolk when she was three. Her father is the poet George Barker, he had 15 children - Raffaella is the oldest of those by the novelist Elspeth Barker. . She recalls worrying about how to respond at school when asked how many brothers and sisters she had. She did not know the answer!! Review of Hens Dancing - Raffaella Barker

Stags and Hens

Advantages: Superbly written, witty, funny, and yet thought-provoking
Disadvantages: If acted badly, is an insult to a superb piece

with the play came earlier this calendar year (the last academic year) when, as the final first year performance project for part of my group, I was cast as Eddie. The play itself, as with most, if not all of Russell's work, is set in Liverpool. Taking place in the late 70's, and drawing many of it's cultural references from that era, it tells the tale of a soon-to-be-wed couple's stag and hen night's, both of which are, unwittingly, taking place in the same disco. Set entirely in the toilet area of the venue, the play's main focus is on the groups collective struggles to find companionship and a sense of belonging, both within their friendship circle and in the area as a whole. Review of Stags And Hens - Willy Russell

A good quality toy but not quite hen shaped!

Advantages: Good quality, hardwearing, bight colours, helps dexterity

I have recently had the chance to ?play? with some great toys as part of some part time work that I have been doing. It has been great to pretend I?m a child again but it is also fun to look at the toys through an adult?s eyes and be able to see why they would be both fun and educational to the children who will play with them. One of the toys that I really liked was the John Crane Pintoy Stacking Hen designed by Djeco, which is suitable for children aged 18 months and above. I have taken a look on the Internet and found that it costs between £10 and £11 and is available on a variety of sites.
