of some interesting friends,Hercules and Love Affairis , unlikely though it sounds, the point where classic disco meets classical myth--the title apparently refers to the legendary hero's fondness for his own sex. Although co-produced by LCD Soundsystem's Tim Goldsworthy,Hercules and Love Affairis a flightier, more hedonistic proposition, filled with echoes of long gone clubs and ghosts of the pre-AIDS glory days of New York's gay scene. Yet it celebrates rather than mourns the past as a series of guest vocalists leave their mark, Antony Hegarty the most familiar. The terrific, irresistible single "Blind", reportedly some four years in gestation, stands out but the wistfully positive "Raise Me Up" isn't far behind, Hegarty's inimitably sad tones incongruously juxtaposed with a gleeful arrangement. Though even his voice has a hard battle with the lift from Frankie Knuckles's classic "Your Love" which underpins the opener "Time Will". The spaced out jazz of "This Is My Love", sung by Butler himself, the dizzily ecstatic house of "You Belong", the purest of flashbacks, and Kim Ann's vocal turn on the elegant "Athene" are other highlights on a remarkably assured and entertaining first effort. This year won't see a better example of danceable melancholy thanHercules and Love Affair.--Steve Jelbert

Album Notes: This self-titled debut by New York based group Hercules And Love Affair is the musical brainchild of DJ/producer Andrew Butler. Co-produced with Tim Goldsworthy (DFA), this is the sound of modern disco. Taking their cue from late 1970s underground dance culture - an era unfairly maligned and dismissed - it recalls the panache, individuality and grooves of Salsoul, Chic, Arthur Russell and Inner City. Hypnotic rhythms preside over melancholic melodies with enthralling results. Includes the single 'Blind' featuring Antony Hegarty (Antony And The Johnsons).
Advantages: Some great songs Disadvantages: Some naff songs
...as Reginald Kenneth Dwight and made his way as a composing talent in the Tin Pan Alley scene where he eventually found and teamed up with lyricist Bernie Taupin, kicking off a wonderful partnership which was to enjoy phenomenal success over the following six or seven years.
1969 brought the debut album, a lack lustre and disappointing affair called Empty Sky - Empty Sky - Val-Hala - Western Ford Gateway - Hymn 2000 - Lady What's Tomorrow - Sails - The Scaffold - Skyline Pigeon - Gulliver/Hay Chewed/Reprise. There were a couple of good tracks but really nothing to write home about.
However, a year later, the extraordinary Elton John album, with its dark and shadowy cover, and expansive and string soaked romantic songs, was a great advance, winning an audience for the Taupin-John axis. It was a maudlin collection, reeking of self pity...

Advantages: Great modern pop music Disadvantages: back up tracks not so good
...Glasgow's Superstar release their latest single "I lovelove" which is supposed to be about legendary band Love and how their "Forever changes" album inspired Superstar's vocalist Joe McAlinden to join a band. Well whatever it is about the chorus sounds brilliant in a soaring way very reminscient of the seventies mixed with verses that owe a very heavy debt to the UK trip hop scene, not a mix on paper you would expect to work well but it does. "Best of everything" and "Theme" the other two tracks on this single continue the bands loveaffair with the seventies and their insistance on putting a modern twist on classic songwriting which cannot be a bad thing....
